Dutch hoofdklasse 2018: Round 14, day 1

On the first day of the final round of the regular season, De Glaskoning Twins hosted Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort, DSS hosted Silicon Storks, Meerlease Pioniers hosted HCAW and Curaçao Neptunus hosted L&D Amsterdam Pirates.
Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort 4 – 3 De Glaskoning Twins
A tough day for De Glaskoning Twins. To keep a shot at the playoffs, the club needed to
win every game of the final round. But their start could not have been worse. After getting out of the first innings with a 1-1 tie, Cityside Apartments broke open the score in the second inning. With Misja Harcksen on the mound, they scored three times thanks to an HBP, a double, a passed ball, a single and another passed ball. After the third inning, Harcksen was replaced by Jan Evertse, who thrived in his usual role as fire man. He pitched the remaining six innings and allowed only three hits and struck out four.
For seven innings, Jos de Jong dominated the Twins lineup as he gave up an unearned run on six hits and a walk and fanned six. In the eighth and ninth inning Twins rallied for a run each. In the eighth Jamie Verheyleweghen singled to drive in Nick Peels. Thanks to a wild pitch, Twins got runners in scoring position, but their rally fell short as Bob van der Meer grounded out. In the ninth, Jarreau Martina scored on Ruar Verkerk’s single but there the offense stalled.
Misja Harcksen took the loss as Jos de Jong earned the win and Colin van Laar earned the save.
Best hitter for Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort was Rowan van Hoek, who went 3 for 4 with three doubles and a run scored.
Silicon Storks 1 – 6 DSS
For half an inning, Silicon Storks may have hoped for a better result as they took an early
lead in the top of the first inning as Tijani Dunlop got on base on a double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Joost van den Bergh’s single. But in the second half of the first inning, DSS turned the tables and never looked back. Thanks to six singles, a sac bunt, a triple and two stolen bases, DSS scored six times.
In the remainder of the game, Storks had runners in scoring position twice but could not cash in.
Greg Mosel earned the win after six innings in which he gave up one run on three hits
and two walks as he struck out nine. The loss went to Jose Moreno, who lasted 3.1 innings in which he gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk.
Best hitters for DSS were Denzell Richardson and Koen Werkman who went 2 for 3.
HCAW 1 – 2 Meerlease Pioniers
In a very close game, Meerlease Pioniers stayed at the right side of the score.
In the third inning, Pioniers took a slim 1-0 lead when Oliver van der Wijst singled through the left side to drive in Bohdi de Vreede for the opening run.
It would take HCAW until the seventh inning to tie the game at one even though they were close in the third inning with a runner at third. In the seventh, Denzel Bryson singled down the left field line to drive in Kevin Weijgertse from second base. But after Pioniers’ Glenn Bakker was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning, he advanced on a balk and scored when Mark Smit singled to left field.
Lars Huijer, who lasted seven innings, earned the win as he gave up one run on four hits
and struck out nine. Moreno Vork took the loss after three innings of work in which he gave up one run on one hit and a walk as he struck out two.
Best hitter for Meerlease Pioniers was Mark Smit with two hits out of three at-bats with an RBI. Smit got two of the three hits that Pioniers collected.
L&D Amsterdam Pirates 1 – 2 Curaçao Neptunus
Another close loss for L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs Curaçao Neptunus. In a fine pitching
matchup between Rob Cordemans and Diegomar Markwell, Neptunus took the lead in the fourth inning. Thanks to some small ball, Stijn van der Meer, who got on base on a single, advanced to second base and scored on Dwayne Kemp’s single up the middle.
In that fourth inning, Rob Cordemans gave up his first three hits. It took Markwell until the seventh inning to give up the first hit to Pirates. By then, Pirates had already scored the game-tying run on a sac fly after Nick Urbanus got on base on a throwing error and advanced to third base on the error.
Eventually, a dropped fly ball in the ninth inning cost Pirates the game as Shaldimar Daantji scored all the way from second base on that error by second baseman Niels van Weert.
Jim Ploeger, who allowed the game-winning run on base, took the loss. Loek van Mil, who pitched the final 1.2 innings earned the win as he allowed one hit and struck out three.
Stijn van der Meer and Dwayne Kemp both went 2 for 4. Van der Meer scored once and Kemp drove in a run.
