Dutch hoofdklasse 2018: Round 2, day 1

On the first day of round one, HCAW hosted Curaçao Neptunus, DSS headed to neighboring Hoofddorp to face Pioniers, Silicon Storks hosted Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort and L&D Amsterdam Pirates took on De Glaskoning Twins in Amsterdam.

Curaçao Neptunus  9  –  1  HCAW
For four innings, Curaçao Neptunus’ Diegomar Markwell was on no-hit course but JulianNeptunusGoins spoiled the attempt with a leadoff triple in the fifth inning, leading to the only run HCAW scored. In the second inning, With three consecutive singles by Quentin de Cuba, Gregory Muller and Darryl Collins in the second inning, Neptunus opened the score to take a 1-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Neptunus extended their lead with three runs on a bases-clearing double by Dwayne Kemp. A three-run homer by Dudley Leonora and a throwing error, both in the seventh inning, gave Neptunus an 8-1 lead. Eventually, a triple by Shaldimar Daantji and a single by Quentin de Cuba put the ninth and final run on the board for Neptunus.
Diegomar Markwell pitched five innings, gave up a run on one hit and three walks and fanned four. Timo van Ancum took the loss after four innings and allowing a run on fiveHCAWhits. Van Ancum also struck out one.
Best hitter for Curaçao Neptunus was Benjamin Dille, who went 3 for 5 with a double.
Neptunus’ lineup was on a roll tonight as it collected sixteen hits compared to the one hit HCAW got.

DSS  3  –  3  Hoofddorp Pioniers
A tie in Hoofddorp tonight. After taking a 2-0 lead, Pioniers gave away the initiative toDSS DSS as the club from Haarlem scored three runs in the eighth inning. Eventually, Pioniers tied the game in the bottom of the eighth when an HBP, a walk and a single loaded the bases. Mark Smit drove in the game-tying run with a single to center field.
In the first inning, Joey Eeman reached base on a throwing error, stole second and scored when Glenn Bakker’s “hit” was not fielded clearly by second baseman Kevin Nieveld. In the sixth inning Glenn Bakker scored once more when Mark Smit singled to right field. DSS’ three runs in the eighth inning were scored thanks to two walks, a double and a throwing error.
Despite his good outing, Lars Huijer of Pioniers got the no-decision. He, pitched seven innings, allowed three hits, walked one and struck out nine. Greg Mosel of DSS alsoPionierspitched six strong innings in which he gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk as he fanned seven.
Best hitter for Hoofddorp Pioniers was Mark Smit, who went 3 for 5 with two doubles.
Best hitter for DSS was Tino van Erk, who went 2 for 4.

Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort  11  –  8  Silicon Storks
Despite hitting five extra-base hits, Silicon Storks wasn’t able to win the game tonight.BSC QuickDue to the long innings, the game was called after the eighth inning thanks to the curfew rule, that doesn’t allow new innings to be started after 22:30 (10:30 PM) (yes, this is baseball in the Netherlands).
After Silicon Storks tied the game at three in the fourth inning, Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort had a big fifth frame. With runners on third and second, Rachid Engelhardt drove in Jordy Burger. Back-to-back walks by Remian Denis and Jules Cremer, the second run of the inning scored. Denis and Bryan Engelhardt could score the third and fourth run of the inning on a single by Wesley Bernardus to give Quick a 7-4 lead. Storks scored a run in the sixth and four in the eighth but their rally in the eighth fell short as Quick had scored two runs in the seventh and two in the top of the eighth.
Despite pitching just 1.2 innings, Luis Figuera earned the win. He gave up two hits andImage result for storks honkbal struck out one. Darryl Jamoena took the loss as he gave up seven runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks as he struck out one.
Best hitter for Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort was Bryan Engelhardt, who went 3 for 4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.

De Glaskoning Twins  2  –  3  L&D Amsterdam Pirates
It was one of those nights on which De Glaskoning Twins played a solid game withTwins flawless defense but still lost to L&D Amsterdam Pirates.
Twins took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Dennis de Quint led off with a double, followed by Shurman Marlin, who singled to left field on which Dennis could advance to third. Singles by Bram Grooten and Max Kops allowed Twins to score twice.
Pastor Chavez Martinez pitched five decent innings before he started to struggle with his control. He allowed Pirates to load the bases with three consecutive walks. At that point, he was replaced by Jakob Syrén, who could not stop Pirates from scoring two runs to tie the game. After Jakob worked his way through the seventh inning, he had to surrender the game-winning run to Pirates. Linoy Croes drove the ball to left field for a double and scored on Rashid Gerard’s single to left field.
Despite pitching seven strong innings, Kevin Heijstek did not get the win. Maickel Rietel,Amsterdam Pirateswho pitched in the eighth and gave up one hit and fanned one, did. Jakob Syrén took the loss. In 2.2. innings, he gave up a run on four hits and a walk as he struck out one.
Best hitter for L&D Amsterdam Pirates was Remco Draijer, who went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
