Baseball related songs: “The cheap seats” by Alabama

In this episode of Baseball related songs, we pay attention to the song “The cheap seats” of the American country music group Alabama. The song is the third track of their album Cheap Seats.

The song “The cheap seats” is completely about minor league baseball. It is about a town not big enough for MLB but is home to a minor league team and the cheap seats in the outfield, where the subjects of the song are watching the games.

The song was written by songwriters Marcus Hummon and Randy Sharp, who both have an extensive career in country music. “The cheap seats” was released in 1994 and hit number 13 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in mid-1994. It also peaked at number 6 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks.

The song features Des Moines, Iowa (home to the Iowa Cubs, the Chicago Cubs AAA farm team) but even though the song is about Des Moines in the Midwest, the video is shot at historic Engel Stadium in Chattanooga Tennessee, former home of the Chattanooga Lookouts (AA Southern League). The ballpark has never seen any higher baseball than AA. Next to the location of historic Engel Stadium, the video is also shot at the band’s hometown Fort Payne, Alabama.

The lyrics of the song are as follows:

This town ain’t big, this town ain’t small
It’s a little of both they say
Our ball club may be minor league but at least it’s triple A
We sit below the Marlboro man, above the right field wall
We do the wave all by ourself
Hey ump, a blind man could’ve made that call

We like our beer flat as can be
We like our dogs with mustard and relish
We got a great pitcher what’s his name
Well we can’t even spell it
We don’t worry about the pennant much
We just like to see the boys hit it deep
There’s nothing like the view from the cheap seats

The game was close, we’ll call it a win
Go off to toast the boys again
That local band is back in town
They got a kinda minor league sound
They’re not that bad, they’re not that good
But all in all it’s understood
We wanna dance, they wanna play
We wouldn’t have it any other way

We like our beer flat as can be
We like our dogs with mustard and relish
We got a great pitcher what’s his name
Well we can’t even spell it
We don’t worry about the pennant much
We just like to see the boys hit it deep
There’s nothing like the view from the cheap seats

Cheap seats

Now the majors called up ol’ what’s his name
And one more buildin’ rises tall
And suddenly we’re all grown up
And this old town not quite so small
But I’ll always miss the middle size town
In the middle of the middle-west
With no name pitchers and local bands
And mustard and relish and all the rest

We like our beer flat as can be
We like our dogs with mustard and relish
We got a great pitcher what’s his name
Well we can’t even spell it
We don’t worry about the pennant much
We just like to see the boys hit it deep
There’s nothing like the view from the cheap seats

Cheap seats

The video shows a game between the Chattanooga Lookouts and the Carolina Mudcats. The latter team used to play in the Southern League in 1994 as well. Currently, the Mudcats are playing in the Carolina League. In 2012, the Cincinnati Reds moved their AA team to Pensacola and the Kinston Indians moved to Zebulon, NC, to become the Mudcats.
