While the rest of the state of North Carolina is waiting for the solar eclipse, people in Fayetteville have more important things to do. The Astros will break ground on their new stadium in Fayetteville after the team has spent almost a full season of two seasons in Buies Creek. The Astros will get shovels in the ground to start the construction on their new $31 million stadium, where its A Advanced affiliate will play starting in 2019. The city of Fayetteville and the Houston Astros have signed a 30-year lease on the stadium.

The Black Dagger, a parachute team with the U.S. Army Special Operations Command will mark the event by parachuting in the soon-to-be construction site.

The Astros’ A Advanced affiliate in the Carolina League saw the light after the Bakersfield Blaze was disbanded and moved to the East Coast. The other California League team that moved East was the High Desert Mavericks, a Texas Rangers affiliate. That team moved to Kinston, NC, to become the Down East Wood Ducks.

When it comes to nicknames, the Astros A Advanced affiliate is still in the process of finding one. After a name the team contest, five names popped up. The fans can now vote for the best name. The options are Woodpeckers, Fatbacks, Fly Traps, Wood Dogs, and Jumpers.

Here is the final schematic design of the stadium. As far as I am concerned, the soon to be ballpark looks pretty neat.

A year ago, both parties signed a memorandum of understanding on the 30-year lease of the stadium. One of the points both parties agreed on in this MOU, was that the city of Fayetteville gets 50% of the money generated by the naming rights of the stadium. With a few construction delays of ballparks in the recent past, the following point is quite important: Deviations in the construction, which could result in venue costs exceeding budget must be approved by the City unless paid for by the Astros.
