European Championship: Dutch unbeaten to championship game

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor European Championship baseball 2016

The Kingdom of the Netherlands took on Belgium today. After taking a quick 1-0 lead, Belgium bounced  back and took a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Eventually the Dutch turned the tables and walked off as a victor and enter the championship game with an unbeaten status.

Kingdom of the Netherlands  12  –  3  Belgium

Perhaps it was a bit of underestimation, but the Dutch let Belgium take a 3-1 lead when Thomas de Wolf and Robin Roevens singled home three runs.
But the Dutch would restore the order when they scored four runs, partially thanks to a bases loaded triple by Christopher Garia, in the fifth inning.
A one run sixth, a four run fourth and a two run eighth led to a 12-3 victory over Belgium.

Even though Orlando Yntema wasn’t quite sharp, he earned the win after six innings of work in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and five walks and four strike outs.

Terrence Antonacci, the Belgian pitcher with an Italian name, took the loss. In four complete innings and five batters faced in the fifth, he gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks. Antonacci also struck out two. Kenny van den Branden took over but he could not stop the Dutch offense either as he gave up four runs on five hits, walked three and struck out one in just 2.1 innings.

Where Garia was the second choice of manager Steve Janssen in the first games of he tournament, after Roger Bernadina did not appear on a training he was sent home and Garia filled the void. Last night he was the hero when he singled home Stijn van der Meer for the win over Italy. Today Garia was the best hitter for the Dutch as he went 4 for 6 with a triple, four RBI and two runs scored.

With Orlando Yntema and Jim Ploeger on the mound tonight, all other pitcher got a needed rest for tomorrow’s game in which the Dutch will take on Spain that beat Germany but had to work for their money.
