Ozhaino Albies wins Southern League’s batting title

Atlanta Braves prospect, Ozhaino Albies, who plays for the Mississippi Braves has won the Southern League batting title. But a certain rule was needed to make him win. Afbeeldingsresultaat voor Southern league

The talented kid from Curacao hit .321 but because he played a couple of weeks at AAA level with the Gwinnett Braves, he would not have had enough at bats at AA level to qualify for the Southern League batting crown. But rule 9.22(a) gave him a helping hand so Ozzie finished a great season with some hardware. In short rule 9.22(a) says that if someone has the highest BA with not without the sufficient plate appearances should be awarded the batting title if the difference can be added to the hitter with the least plate appearances and his BA is still higher.

And that is what was the case with Ozzie Albies. The player with enough plate appearances, Chesny Young finished the season with a .303 average. Ozhaino had a .321 average but with seven plate appearances to Albies’ total (0 for 7) his batting average would be .315, still higher than Young. So Albies is the new batting champ of the Southern League.

Albies and his team, the Mississippi Braves will head to the play offs of the Southern League where they will face the Pensacola Blue Wahoos  for the South Division championship.

After the Southern League play offs, Albies will head to Arizona to play in the Arizona Fall League. The Atlanta Braves will do everything possible to make Albies ready for the bigs next year. Ozzie will be added to the roster of the Salt River Rafters a combined roster of players from the Braves, the Diamondbacks, the Rockies, the Tigers and the Brewers.
