Milwaukee Brewers prospect comes out
Something that is rather normal nowadays in the Netherlands and the most of Europe, but apparently someone being gay is still hard to accept for many Americans.
Yesterday, David Denson, a first baseman and one of the top prospects in the Brewers’ farm system made it public that he is gay. This happened in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
After a talk with his team mates he felt that he needed to do this. Of course telling his team mates was a big hurdle to overcome. But as they said, that they accepted him how he is and that they judge him because of his character and his ability as a ballplayer, he felt relieved.
Personally I don’t understand why this had to be made public. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that homosexuality isn’t widely accepted. His team mates accept him the way he is and I hope for him his family does too. Those are the people that should know in the first place.
Denson is a power hitter that participated in the International Power Showcase in 2013 when he hit a record setting 515 feet homerun.
Anyhow, I think it is a brave step to take. Again, homosexuality is not widely accepted in the USA. There will always be people that judge him because of his sexuality. It makes him the first active ballplayer in affiliated baseball that admits that he is gay.
I sincerely hope that his coming out won’t get him into trouble during his career. But as long as he performs well as a slugger, I think that people will accept him as a ballplayer and forget about his sexuality sooner. Unfortunatlely there will always be people in baseball that will oppose to him, people like Minnesota outfielder Torii Hunter, who is anti-gay because of his Christian belief.
