Dutch Hoofdklasse Play Offs: Sunday August 16

On the third day of round one of the Dutch Play Offs, the following games were scheduled:

Curacao Neptunus @ Corendon Kinheim and L&D Amsterdam Pirates @ Vaessen Pioniers.

Curacao Neptunus @ Corendon Kinheim  19 – 0

After losing the previous two games vs Corendon Kinheim, Curacao Neptunus was in a must win situation today.
In the first inning the Rotterdam based team took a 2-0 lead after Dwayne Kemp hit a lead off single, stole second base and advanced to third on a 4-3 ground out by Benjamin Dille. Kemp scored on Raily Legito’s double down the right field line. Legito on his turn scored on Gianison Boekhoudt’s single to left field.
In the second inning Neptunus flexed it’s muscles. With the bases loaded and one out, Benjamin Dille was hit by pitcher Nick Veltkamp and thus drove in the third run for Neptunus. After Raily Legito singled through the left side of the infield, the Kemp brothers scored and Dille moved to second base. For manager Wim Martinus, this was the signal to replace Nick Veltkamp with Glenn Wassink. But Wassink served up a homerun to Gianison Boekhoudt on a 1-0 count, that drove in three runs to make it 8-0 for Neptunus.
A five run third and a four run fourth extended the score to 17-0.
What did Corendon Kinheim do? Not much as Neptunus starting pitcher Kenny van den Branden cruised through the first four innings. He gave up a double to Mervin Gario in the first inning, singles to Dachenko Ricardo and  Sven van den Sanden in the second inning, a single to Mervin Gario in the third and a single to Niels van Weert in the fourth.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jorian van Acker replaced Kenny van den Branden who only had thrown 75 pitches and who would earn the win with no runs but six hits allowed and with one walk and three strikeouts. Kinheim didn’t fare much better with Van Acker on the mound as he retired the side in the bottom of the sixth. Neptunus scored one more run in the top of the seventh to reach the final score of 19-0 as Jorian van Acker also retired the side in the seventh.
Nick Veltkamp took the loss as he gave up seven runs on six hits in just 1.1 innings. Veltkamp walked one batter and didn’t strikeout any. Best hitter for Neptunus was Dwayne Kemp who went 5 for 6 with a double and four runs scored. Most impact though had Raily Legito who drove in six runs.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates @ Vaessen Pioniers  8 – 6
After two losses in the previous two games, it was up to Vaessen Pioniers to win today’s game. But L&D Amsterdam Pirates wasn’t willing to cooperate. After two scoreless innings, Pirates took the lead in the third inning. With Rashid Gerard on second and Roelie Henrique at first, Nick Urbanus hit a bases clearing triple down the right field line. Urbanus was driven in on Kenny Berkenbosch’ single up to the middle.
Three innings later Pirates scored two more runs when Rashid Gerard  hit a bases loaded single to drive in Kenny Berkenbosch, followed by a sac fly hit by Linoy Croes who drove in Bas Nooij. But finally in the bottom of the sixth, Pioniers would do something back. After Kevin Weijgertse and Christian Lopez singled, Dirk van ‘t Klooster grounded into a force out at second where Lopez was put out. With runners on the corners Danny Rombley singled towards first base to drive in Weijgertse and to put Pioniers on the board. After a visit of the coach, Kyle Ward walked Vince Rooi to load the bases. But Mark Jan Moorman singled to left field to drive in Danny Rombley and Dirk van ‘t Klooster. Manager Charles Urbanus had seen enough and replaced Kyle Ward with Robin Schel, who got out of the inning. But the game was a game again with a 5-3 score.
Pirates scored another run in the top of the seventh to make it 6-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Dennis Burgersdijk replaced Robin Schel on the mound. Burgersdijk didn’t start well as he gave up a lead off walk to Kevin Dirksen. But Burgersdijk recovered well as he retired the next three batters.
It looked like that Pirates would walk away with an easy victory. But in the bottom of the eighth, Pioniers suddenly caught fire. After he retired the first two batters, Dennis Burgersdijk couldn’t get out of the inning. He gave up two consecutive walks to Vince Rooi and Mark Jan Moorman. Then manager Charles Urbanus pulled Burgersdijk and replaced him with Daan Hendrix. But with a 1-0 offering Quintin de Cuba doubled down the right field line and drove in Vince Rooi. Moorman advanced to third on the play. As Kevin Dirksen singled to left field, Moorman scored and De Cuba advanced to third. But thanks to the error by left fielder Roeli Henrique De Cuba could score the game tying run. So with the game tied at six, both teams headed to the decisive ninth inning. Roelie Henrique led off that inning with a single before Byron Cornelisse replaced Dennis Buring on the mound. Then Michael Duursma singled through the right side of the infield and Henrique moved to third on the hit. After Cornelisse retired the next two batters, Roelie Henrique scored on a wild pitch and Michael Duursma advanced to second base and advanced to third on the throwing error by catcher Quintin de Cuba. Duursma scored on Remco Draijer’s double to right center field. Despite catching Pirates in the eighth, Pioniers coudn’t do the same trick in the ninth as Daan Hendrix retired the side for the win. In 1.1 innings he gave up an unearned run on two hits and struck out two. Losing pitcher was Byron Cornelisse In one inning he gave up one run on two hits. Cornelisse struck out one and walked one.
Best hitter for L&D Amsterdam Pirates was Kenny Berkenbosch, who went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Mark Jan Moorman drove in two runs on two hits out of three at bats. He scored one run himself.

After one round the standings in the play offs look as follows:

Due to the fact that L&D Amsterdam Pirates won the regular season, they took six points with them into the play off round.
Runner up Neptunus took four points with them and Corendon Kinheim that finished third took two points with them. That explains the standings a bit.
