Dutch hoofdklasse 2017: Round 8, day 2
No ties today as L&D Amsterdam beat host DSS in seven innings, host Pioniers beat HCAW with a big margin and host UVV beat De Glaskoning Twins in a convincing way.
L&D Amsterdam Pirates 13 – 2 DSS
For six innings, DSS kept track with L&D Amsterdam Pirates rather well as the Amsterdam-based team had a 3-1 lead. But an offensive outburst in the seventh frame drove in ten runs for Pirates resulting in a bit flattered score.
Pirates opened the score in the second inning when Jesse Aussems drew a walk and could score all the way from first on a fielding error by shortstop Mitchel Dautzenberg.
In the next two innings, Pirates would score a run each.
In the bottom of the fourth, DSS got on the board thanks to a solo home run hit by Devano Pieter.
Despite giving up three runs and walking five, Mike Groen kept his team in the game. In six innings he allowed four hits and struck out one. But after the sixth inning, he was replaced by Donny Breek as Groen had thrown 93 pitches. From that moment on the floodgates opened. Thanks to two home runs, two doubles and a couple of walks, Pirates scored ten runs to end the game in seven innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, DSS did something back as Sven van de Sanden homered off Dennis Burgersdijk. But that was all DSS could do.
Robin Schel pitched six innings for the win. He gave up one run on five hits and fanned seven. Mike Groen took the loss.
Best hitter for L&D Amsterdam Pirates was Zerzinho Croes, who went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs batted in and three runs scored.
HCAW 7 – 12 Hoofddorp Pioniers
Hoofddorp Pioniers took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning when Shurman Marlin homered with runners on the corners. In the top of the second, HCAW got on the board when Kevin Dirksen scored from second on Rowan van Hoek’s single through the left side. After Pioniers extended their lead to 5-1 in the third inning, HCAW struck back in the third inning to take the lead. Thanks to five singles, a double and a home run, HCAW scored six. After Pioniers scored another run in the bottom of the third inning, neither team scored in the next two frames.
Pioniers decided the game in the sixth inning. An offensive outburst led to six runs.
With the bases loaded, Shurman Marlin drove in two runs with a single to right center field. Pioniers loaded the bases again before Gianni Frolijk singled through the left side to drive in two more runs. The fifth and sixth runs were driven in by Glenn Bakker on a single to left field.
Scott Ronnenbergh earned the win after he replaced Chris Pfau after 2.2 innings. Ronnenbergh lasted 5.1 innings in which he gave up just one run, walked one and fanned one. Kaj Timmermans took the loss after 5.1 innings in which he gave up eight runs (six earned) on eleven hits and two walks and struck out five.
Two players earned the honor of being the best hitter as Shurman Marlin and Mark Smit both went 4 for 5. Marlin drove in six runs and scored twice himself, Smit drove in two and scored once.
De Glaskoning Twins 3 – 9 Pickles UVV
Last Thursday, De Glaskoning Twins overcame a 5-run lead, but Pickles UVV”s 6-run lead was too much to overcome this time.
Pickles UVV already had a 3-0 lead before Twins scored a run in the top of the fifth inning. But in the bottom of that inning, UVV scored three more runs to walk away to a 6-1 lead. Berend Ruben opened the score in that inning when he was driven in on a single hit by Brandon Rijnsbergen. After Cecil Commencia was hit by a pitch, Rick Kuipers hit into what should have been a double play but after the out at second, shortstop Chris Gé made a throwing error that allowed Rijnsbergen to score. After Kuipers stole second, he advanced to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch. UVV scored three more runs in the next innings. Twins scored two more runs in the eighth. With a runner on first and second, Bram Grooten singled home Denzel Bryson. Dennis de Quint’s single loaded the bases before Melvin Perdue hit into a force out on second base that drove in Jamie Verheylewegen. But that was all Twins was capable of.
Jurjen van Zijl earned the win as he pitched a complete game in which he gave up six hits, walked two and struck out four. Mic van de Ven lasted only three innings and faced three batters in the fifth for the loss. Mic gave up three runs on four hits and five walks and struck out one.
Best hitter for Pickles UVV was Sergino Martis, who went 3 for 4 with a double, a RBI and a run scored.
