Yankees and Dutchies in Spring Training, Friday March 20
Against the Detroit Tigers the Yankees flexed their muscles with seven extra basehits, eleven runs on eleven hits in total. Jose Pirela hit a bases clearing triple in the first with runner on third and second. Rob Refsnyder hit his first homerun in the first inning and took Jose Pirela with him. A-Rod took him as an example and slammed his second dinger of ST over the center field wall on a 2-2 count off Bruce Rondon. In total the Yankees legged out three triples (Galvez, Gardner, Heathcott), two doubles (Ryan and Pirela) and two homers.
Adam Warren helped his own case by allowing just one run on four hits. He also struck out three.
Final score: Yankees 11 – Tigers 2.
The Red Sox fell 11-5 to the Orioles. Xander Bogaerts went 0 for 2 with an RBI, a strike out and a runner left on base. Jonathan Schoop went 2 for 2 for the O’s with two runs scored and an RBI.
In a 5-4 victory over the Cardinals, Mets’ Matt den Dekker went 1 for 3 with a single, a stolen base and a run scored in the third inning.
Andrelton Simmons went 1 for 3. In the fourth inning he laid down a bunt right before Jarod Saltalamacchia, who sliped and fell on the ground, so Simmons could reach first base safeley. The Braves fell 5-1 to the Marlins.
Already being sent down to Minor League camp, Shawn Zarraga was allowed to make the trip to San Antonio to take on the Texas Rangers. Shawn entered the game in the sixth inning as a defensive substitution. In his sole at bat he singled on a line drive to right field., a hit that advanced Nate Samson to third base. Zarraga was thrown out at second when Alex Guerrero grounded into a force out that drove in Samson for the eighth inning.
