Oklahoma City Baseball Announces New Name

After the Oklahoma Dodgers played under the name Oklahoma City Baseball during the 2024 season, as an omen of the new name that was about to come, the club announced its new moniker and uniforms yesterday. The club will be named Oklahoma City Comets.

My first thoughts were “Why Comets? What is the link between a comet and Oklahoma City?” But during the introduction it became clear the name Comets refers to Mickey Mantle. Born and raised in the state of Oklahoma, the Yankees’ slugger was called the Commerce Comet.

The brand’s light blue and red colors and logo, with a baseball shooting through the sky like a comet, honor the team’s long-time affiliation with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Even though the club has an orignal name now, the look is still kind of Dodgerized as stated in the sentence above. When you look at the uniforms, there is still a strong resemblance with the Dodgers. The same shade of blue, the same red uniform number on the front of the jersey.

According to Oklahoma City Comets President/General Manager Michael Byrnes, the club wanted its new name and brand to be something that reflects Oklahoma’s rich baseball history and the affiliation with the Dodgers but is also uniquely theirs and embraces the future of our city and state. “Mickey Mantle, a.k.a the Commerce Comet, is an iconic baseball figure for our state, our city, our team and our ballpark. In addition, the OKC Comets name and different marks that display images of space suggest a look toward the future and enables us to have a bit of fun bringing our new identity to life for our fans,” said Byrnes.

The selection of the name has been a long and thorough process. Over the past two years, team officials hosted focus groups with members of the community and reviewed the high volume of feedback received from fans via social media and email submissions.
