Lexington Legends Re-Adopt Old Name

About a year ago, the Lexington Legends changed their name into Lexington CounterClocks. But the new ownership of the club decided to return to the previous moniker.

The Lexington Legends were one of the 40 clubs that were kicked out of affiliated minor league baseball in a move that saves the greedy MLB owners about $700,000 per season. As a result, the club joined the Atlantic League in 2021.

In their first season in the Atlantic League, the club made the playoffs, in which it beat the Charleston Dirty Birds in the Division Series and the Long Island Ducks in the Championship Series.

The “new” moniker comes with a new logo. Sure, there are similarities with the old Legends logos, but the new logo is quite different. The new logo is an old time ballplayer in the shape of a baseball. It sports a handlebar mustache, mischievous smirk, and knowing wink. Especially the handlebar mustache is a returning feature in the new logo.

When visition the region before buying the club, the new ownership hinted to the old Legends moniker, so the return to the old name doesn’t come as a surprise: “Being able to create this new brand identity for the Lexington Legends was particularly  meaningful to me, as Kentucky has been my home for the past 20+ years. I am very excited to see this new identity being worn by the players and enjoyed by the fans at Lexington’s stadium, a ballpark that will always hold a special place in my heart, as my son and his teammates won  the Kentucky state high school baseball championship there,” said designer Dan Simon of  Studio Simon via press release. Simon designed the full suite of Lexington marks. That includes the “Kentucky L,” an “L” made with the outline of Kentucky, and the stacked LEX text. Home and road jerseys feature new, custom “Legends”  and “Lexington” cursive word marks, an homage to the scripts that have adorned classic baseball jerseys for generations.

The secondary logo is a nod to the State of Kentucky, which is part of the L-logo.

Here are some other examples of new logos the club has adopted.
