Spire City Ghost Hounds Will Sit Out 2024 Season
In a surprising announcement on Instagram, the Spire City Ghost Hounds announced the team will sit out the 2024 Atlantic League season. It all has to do with an upcoming expansion of the league in 2024.
WIth this expansion, the number of teams will be uneven, and therefore the league asked one of the teams to take a sabbatical. Since the (2023 expansionist) Ghost Hounds are sharing their ballpark with the former MiLB and now collegiate (MLB Draft League) Frederick Keys, the scheduling for that stadium is rather complicated.
Attain Sports and Entertainment Founder and CEO Greg Baroni stated: “We enjoyed the opportunity to compete in the Atlantic League this season, and with the planned ALBP expansion to 12 teams, we are committed to a full home schedule when we return to play in 2025. While we may not be on the Atlantic League schedule for the upcoming season, our commitment to the Ghost Hounds and the incredible community that has rallied around the team remains unwavering.”
With the Ghost Hounds sitting out the next season, their players will be free agents and can sign with any professional ball club that wants to have them.
When you look at the attendance records of the Atlantic League, it shows the Ghost Hounds were drew the least fans during the 2023 season: Only 57,836. Perhaps their record of 23 wins and 37 losses played a part in that. But with that number of fans passing the turnstiles, one may fear the Ghost Hounds may not return in 2025.
