2023 Federation Cup: Deurne Spartans Cruises Past CNTU-OSDYSSOR-Gorn in Tournament Opener

In what looked to become a walkover, Deurne Spartans still needed nine innings to win the game. After two innings, the Belgian runner up of 2022 had a 9-0 lead but didn’t score anymore, despite having the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. Nevertheless the opponent from Ukraine wasn’t never a match.

After a scoreless first inning, Deurne Spartans blew the game wide open in the bottom of the second. Thirteen batters came at bat in that inning, which resulted in a whopping nine runs. Starting pitcher Danyil Kodakovskyi could not record an out. It all started with Frank Alejandro Prieto Burgos reaching first base on a dropped fly ball. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. A walk and another fielding error loaded the bases. When Rafael Duran Garcia drew another walk, Prieto Burgos could score the opening run. Leonel Reina Viant singled to drive in Nando Mostaert. Johiner Alfonso Arguinzones Ocanto and Alexis Marquez both singled to drive in three more runs. CNTU-Osdyssor-Gorn struggled defensively. Pitcher threw a wild pitch that allowed runners to move into scoring position, which was followed by an HBP. A passed ball allowed Cédric Desmedt to score from third base before Nando Mostaert doubled down the left field line to drive in Spartans’ ninth run. 

In the third inning, the Ukrainians got on the board. Konstiantyn Chukas led off with a triple and scored when Roman Boiko singled through the left side. With runners on first and second, Illiya Velykiy singled up the middle to drive in Roman Boiko. Denys Brechko tried to reach third base, but was bowled off third base for the final out of the inning. 

Deurne wasn’t able to score another run as Ihor Lukin and Bohdan Kolesnikov limited them to four hits each, despite loading the bases in the fourth and eighth inning. 

Anderson Denny Gerdel Nieto earned the win. In 7.2 innings he allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk as he struck out ten. Danyil Khodakovski took the loss. In one inning and six batters faced, he allowed six runs (four earned) on three hits and three walks, as he struck out one. 

Frank Alejandro Prieto Burgos was the best hitter for Deurne Spartans as he went 3 for 4 with to runs scored. 

Tomorrow, Spartans will face the Zürich Challengers from Switzerland. Normally, this should not be a problem either.
