2021 European Championship: Major Upset, Belgium Falls to Austria

Belgium  11  –  12  Austria
BEL flagIn the third game of the tournament, Austria upset Belgium in a narrow escape and a walk-off victory. Trailing 4-2 at the start of the bottom of the sixth inning, Austria grabbed the lead thanks to a two-run single by Ferdinand Obed and a three-run jack by Sammy Hackl.
A 4-3 groundout by Axel Poesmans allowed Belgium to score a run in the top of the seventh, but the Austrians scored twice in the bottom of the same inning. In the eighth inning, it looked like Belgium turned the tables for good. Two-run home runs by Benjamin Goffaux and Robin Roevens and an RBI triple by Axel Poesmans and an RBI-single by Jamie Verheyleweghen allowed Belgium to score six runs and take an 11-9 lead.
Kenny van den Branden recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth, but then couldn’t get out of the inning. Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases before Ferdinand Obed hit a bases clearing double for the walk-off win.
Nico Schadler earned the win after pitching the ninth inning. He kept the Belgians hitless and issued one walk. Kenny van den Branden took the loss. In two frames he gave up fourAUT flag runs on four hits and two walks.
Going 3 for 3, Philipp Eckel was the best hitter for Austria. He hit a home run, a triple, drove in three and scored four runs.
