RCH-Pinguïns Earns Promotion to The Dutch Hoofdklasse

Four years after the promotion of Silicon Storks to the Dutch hoofdklasse, a new team will knock on the door of the Walhalla of Dutch Baseball. Of all clubs, it is Silicon Storks that lost the second match of the promotion/relegation series vs RCH-Pinguïns.

RCH-Pinguïns 7 – 3 Silicon Storks

After yesterday’s loss in the best-of-three series, it was a do-or-die game for Silicon Storks. Unfortunately for the team from The Hague, it would be die.

RCH-Pinguïns took the lead as it scored one run on a sac fly by Brett Thompson. But Storks bounced back and took the lead twice. In the fourth inning with runners on the corners, Yurdion Martie singled home the game-tying run. A throwing error on a stolen base, allowed Sheadion Jamanika to score the go-ahead run.

In the top of the fifth inning, RCH-Pingguïns came alongside when Brett Thompson hit a sac fly on which Jesse Aussems could score the game-tying run. But in the bottom of the fifth, Silicon Storks took the lead for the final time when Brendly Martina scored on a 6-3 groundout.

A four-run sixth inning was too much to overcome for the team from The Hague. An RBI-single by Brett Thompson, a two-RBI double by Gianni Frolijk and a passed ball made the team from Heemstede score four runs. In the following three innings, RCH-Pinguïns would score one more time.

Former hoofdklasse pitcher Maickel Rietel pitched a gem. In eight innings, he allowed three runs (two earned) on ten hits and a walk as he fanned twelve. Kelvin Knape took the loss. In one inning in relief, he gave up four runs on three hits and four walks.

Average-wise, Ferd van Stekelenburg was the best hitter for RCH-Pinguïns as he went 1 for 1. With three, Brett Thompson had the most RBI for the newly promoted team.

Even though both teams collected as many base hits (twelve) and RCH-Pinguïns committed two errors, Silicon Storks wasn’t able to keep pace. Both teams left a whopping total of thirty runners on base.

Even though RCH-Pinguïns has earned the right to play in the Dutch hoofdklasse in 2022, it remains to be seen if the club really will. First of all, the club must meet the demands of a hoofdklasse license. As written before, rumor has it that the board of the club wants to play in the hoofdklasse, but the players don’t. If that is really the case, Silicon Storks may stay in the hoofdklasse. Hopefully, we will know more in a few days.
