Finally, after a long wait, the competition in Belgium has started. Today the following games in the Baseball Gold League were scheduled: Hoboken Pioneers @ Brasschaat Braves, Royal Greys @ Deurne Spartans, and Borgerhout Squirrels @ Merchtem Cats.
Merchtem Cats 0 – 21 Borgerthout Squirrels
Last year’s runner up took on the recently promoted Merchtem Cats. As expected, the Merchtem Cats were no match for the Borgherhout Squirrels. Normally, the Squirrels would have played their home game on Sunday but as the Merchtem Cats announced they would forfeit the second game of the weekend, the Squirrels home game was moved to Saturday.
Royal Greys 2 – 21 Deurne Spartans
In an Antwerp derby (which almost all matches in the Baseball Gold League are), reigning champions Deurne Spartans had an easy afternoon against the Royal Greys. The Spartans brushed the Greys aside in seven innings. In this case, it was not a mercy-rule shortened game but this year in the round-robin, there will be seven-inning games played due to the coronavirus.
Hoboken Pioneers 2 – 7 Brasschaat Braves
Even though the final score may tell a different story, today’s game between the Hoboken Pioneers and the Brasschaat Braves was rather lopsided. The Pioneers never really had a shot on winning the game. The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and extended their lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning. A lead that proved too big for Hoboken.
Unfortunately, there is no play-by-play available right now, so I cannot write a proper report about today’s games.
