Belgium has lost its spot in the ECC after regaining it last year when the Borgerhout Squirrels won the CEB Cup. After taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Spartans were not able to cling on and lost to Arrows Ostrava 13-3 in seven innings.
Spartans took an early lead when Joannes David Ochoa hit a three-run home run in the first inning. But the three-run lead did not last long as Arrows Ostrava scored six times thanks to a homer, three doubles, a single and a walk.
For the next three innings, the Spartans could limit the damage but in the fifth, Ostrava stepped on it one more time. Five singles, two walks and a double led to seven more runs to get to the ten-run margin that was needed to end the game in seven innings.
After that first inning, the Spartans were completely kept in check by Wesley Roemer, who allowed those three runs as he gave up eight hits in six innings of work in which he didn’t issue a walk and struck out seven for the win.
Alexis Marquez wasn’t able to keep the Arrows’ offense at bay. He pitched into the fifth but couldn’t record an out and thus was he tabbed for ten runs on nine hits and five walks as he struck out four and took the loss.
Best hitter for Arrows Ostrava was Alexander Rubanowitz. The University of California Riverside alumn went 3 for 5 with a double, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
