Unfortunately, it is not an April Fools joke. Due to the corona pandemic, the CEB (European Baseball Confederation) has announced that all European Cup tournaments will be cancelled for 2020, something the FIBS (Italian Baseball and Softball Federation) asked for the other week.
This means that the European Champions Cup with L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Curaçao Neptunus as Dutch representatives, which would be played from June 2nd through June 7th.
Also, the CEB Cup (June 2nd through June 7th) and the Federations Cup (June 16th through June 20th) will be canceled as well.
These cancellations will be a big blow for the organizing clubs Arrows Ostrava (ECC), Templiers de Sénart (CEB Cup) and the Brasschaat Braves (Federations Cup). For these clubs, the sale of tickets and amenities would be a nice financial injection.
Also, the three Federation Cup Qualifiers in Sant Boi (Spain), Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Blagoevgrad (Bulgaria) will be cancelled.
With European governments trying to contain the coronavirus, organizing tournaments with big attendances is at odds with the policy of those governments.
For now, no decision about the various European Cups (national teams) has been made but expect one any time soon.
