On the third day of the ECC, the following games were scheduled:
Group A: Parmaclima Parma @ Bonn Capitals, Rouen Huskies @ Curaçao Neptunus
Group B: Arrows Ostrava @ L&D Amsterdam Pirates, UnipolSai Bologna @ Deurne Spartans.
Parmaclima Parma 17 – 8 Bonn Capitals
In a crazy game, the Bonn Capitals took a 7-0 lead in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Kevin van Mensel hit a grand slam home run followed by three singles, a walk and a double to drive in three more runs. But on its turn, Parma flexed its muscles in the top of the third. Three errors, a lot of walks, three singles and a home run gave the Italians the 8-7 lead.
In the fourth, Parma added another run to their total when Leonardo Zileri hit a solo homer to left field. Eventually, Parma would score eight more runs and Bonn would score once more.
Mauro Schiavoni earned the win after 4.2 innings in relief. He allowed one run on three hits and three walks and struck out four. Philipp Racek took the loss. In 4.2 innings of relief, he allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits and six walks and struck out two.
Scalera was the best hitter for Parma with two hits out of two at-bats. He belted a home run and a double and drove in four RBI and scored once.
This game proved that the pitching staff of clubs other than Dutch isn’t equipped for tournaments like this. They are built for two games per week.
Rouen Huskies – Curaçao Neptunus
Arrows Ostrava – L&D Amsterdam Pirates
Deurne Spartans 0 – 11 UnipolSai Bologna
UnipolSai Bologna handed Deurne Spartans its third loss in as many games.
But even though the Spartans lost with double digits again, it wasn’t as bad in the previous two games. Sure they didn’t score a run but at least they were able to collect seven hits, something that didn’t happen in the previous two games.
In fact, the three-run second inning would have been enough for Bologna’s win. But the Italians pushed for more runs in the third as they scored five times on a single, four walks and a double. After having scored once in the fourth inning, Bologna scored twice in the eighth to end the game prematurely.
Andrea Pizziconi earned the win. In six innings, he gave up five hits and three walks and struck out six. Nabil Tauil took the loss after 2.2 innings. He allowed eight runs (five earned) on five hits and seven walks.
Alessandro Grimaudo was the best hitter for Bologna as he went 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
