Yanks want to extend Didi’s contract
After extending Aaron Hicks’ contract for seven years, the Yankees are reportedly looking to keep Didi Gregorius in their ranks. The only right decision of course.
Didi Gregorius joined the Yankees after a trade on December 5, 2014. He had the ungrateful task to replace Derek Jeter, a big fan favorite. The comments about the acquisition of Gregorius by Yankee fans were not very positive in general. But it was clear they didn’t know Didi yet.
Even though he tried too hard in his first months with the Yankees, Didi had a good season in 2015 and has improved ever since. As he started with a modest .265 batting average he improved to .276 in 2016, .287 in 2017 to drop a bit to .268 last season. But last season he hit an all-time high 27 home runs, proving that he is a real threat at the plate.
Being a left-handed hitter makes him a perfect fit for the short porch in right field of Yankee Stadium.
Gregorius posted a .268/.335/.494 slash line with 23 doubles, five triples and 86 RBI in 134 games last year. He also provided solid defense with just six errors in 132 games at shortstop.
Since Gregorius is clearly one of the better shortstops in the MLB, a contract extension may come with a price but since his bat and defense are solid it will be worth it to sign him before his current contract expires.
