After the Missoula Osprey announced they will rebrand for the 2020 season, another club has announced to change its identity in 2020 due to a new stadium the club will move in.
The Kannapolis Intimidators will change their name and as a result, their logo as well.
Today the team called fans to submit new names through their website.
In the past 25 years, the Kannapolis team changed identity more than once as they were named Phillies, Boll Weevils and Intimidators.
“We are excited to partner with the Kannapolis community in revitalizing the downtown anchored by the new Sports and Entertainment Venue,” said new team owner Andy Sandler. “Giving fans an even better game experience with a new team name, fresh logo and engaging mascot is a very important part of what is ahead for Kannapolis baseball and the city. We look forward to community participation in this exciting rebrand.
The history of the Intimidators dates back to 1965 when the team was located in Spartanburg and named after the Phillies. In 1995, the team moved to Kannapolis and was named Piedmont Phillies before changing its name into Piedmont Boll Weevils in 1996. Eventually, in 2001, the team adopted its current name that will change after the 2019 season as well.
Only after NASCAR racer, Dale Earnhardt bought a share of the team, the name was changed into Intimidators, the nickname of Earnhardt during his racing days.
Since 2001, the team is part of the Chicago White Sox’ farm system. During the 18 years in Kannapolis, the team won one South Atlantic League title (2005) and one division title (2017).
Notable alumni are: Dylan Axelrod, Marlon Byrd, Adam Eaton, Gio Gonzalez, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Quentin.
