Dutch hoofdklasse 2018: Round 12, day 1

On the first day of round twelve, Curaçao Neptunus hosted Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort, Meerlease Pioniers hosted Silicon Storks, DSS hosted De Glaskoning Twins and HCAW hosted L&D Amsterdam Pirates.
Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort 1 – 4 Curaçao Neptunus
Without flexing its muscles Curaçao Neptunus walked off with an easy win tonight. The final score may tell a different story but City Side Apartments was limited to five hits and Neptunus scored four unearned runs thanks to some sloppy defense by Quick Amersfoort that committed six (!) errors. After Neptunus scored its last run in the fifth inning, the game was a done deal. Diegomar Markwell lasted seven innings in which he gave up four hits, walked one and
struck out two for the win. Colin van Laar took the loss after six innings in which he gave up the four unearned runs on six hits and three walks and struck out six.
Best hitter for Curaçao Neptunus was Dudley Leonora who went 2 for 3.
Silicon Storks 0 – 6 Meerlease Pioniers
Lars Huijer kept Silicon Storks in check by allowing only three hits in a complete game
shutout effort in which he struck out ten and did not issue a walk.
Until the seventh inning, it was a pretty close affair. In the fifth inning, Pioniers took a 1-0 lead when Mark Smit scored on Jelle Kroft’s single up the middle. But the team from Hoofddorp would walk away and decide the game in the seventh. An HBP, four singles, a double and a couple of groundouts drove in five runs to give Pioniers a decisive lead.
Lars Huijer earned the win while Nick Winkel took the loss as he gave up three runs on three hits in three innings of work.
Best hitter for Meerlease Pioniers was catcher Damian Melis, who went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.
De Glaskoning Twins 10 – 4 DSS
After trailing for a big part of the game, De Glaskoning Twins struck in the eighth inning.
After both starting pitchers performed pretty well in a pitching duel, DSS took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning after it had taken a 2-0 lead earlier. But in the eighth inning a “simple” bases-loaded single up the middle by Jamie Verheyleweghen cleared he bases after Brian Biezen had scored the equalizer on a single by Shurman Marlin. A triple by Christopher Gé drove in Jamie Verheyleweghen for the fifth run of the inning. After Twins scored three more times in the ninth, DSS scored once more in the bottom of that inning to reach the final score.
Even though Reynaldo Sarmiento Claro pitched just 0.1 inning he earned the win.
Best hitter for De Glaskoning Twins was Shurman Marlin who went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI. Thanks to this win, Twins is within a point of DSS in the standings in the battle for the fourth spot.
L&D Amsterdam Pirates 4 – 0 HCAW
Thanks to the dreaded sun delay the game couldn’t be completed in nine innings. As the
home plate of HCAW is pointing Southeast, the umpire and the catcher are bothered by the setting sun. As a result, the game lasted only eight innings due to the curfew rule that doesn’t allow a game to start a new inning after 22:30 (10:30 PM).
L&D Amsterdam Pirates manager Charles Urbanus normally is rather predictable in his pitching moves but today he did something out of the box. He pulled Robin Schel after just four innings and replaced him with Rob Cordemans, who pitched the remainder of the game. Schel limited HCAW to five hits and struck out four, Cordemans took the win
as he pitched four innings in which he fanned seven and gave up only two hits.
Pirates scored runs in the second, fifth, seventh and eighth inning to reach the final score. Two of the four runs that Pirates scored were unearned.
Best hitter for L&D Amsterdam Pirates was Rashid Gerard who went 2 for 2.
