This week, Jonathan Schoop was named the player of the week for the American League. He could not enjoy very long as the Orioles traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League.

Mark Feinsand was the first on Twitter to confirm the news. Several sports websites also vented the news. The Orioles confirmed the trade on their website as well.

The last couple of days, the rumors about this trade were heating up. The Orioles are dead last in the AL East so it doesn’t come as a surprise they are the sellers here. The Brewers are in the heat of a pennant race in the NL Central, as they trail the Chicago Cubs by one game.

Schoop had a subpar season in 2018. He was an all-star in 2017 but has taken a step back this season. Through 85 games with the Orioles, Schoop produced the following slash line: .244/.273/.447 with 17 home runs. Perhaps a change of environment will be good for the 26-year old Curaçao born second baseman so he can improve in the second half of the season.

The Orioles get right-hander Luis Ortiz, the Brewers’ seventh-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, infielder Jean Carmona (No. 14) and infielder Jonathan Villar (who is about to come off the 10-day DL with a thumb injury) in return.

Schoop made his first steps in professional baseball in 2009 in the Dominican Summer League. It took him four years to make the step to the Bigs. His best season so far was 2017 as he hit .293 with 35 doubles and 32 home runs.
