Dutch hoofdklasse 2018: Round 10, day 3

On the third day of round ten, there were three surprising results as Curaçao Neptunus hosted DSS, L&D Amsterdam hosted Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort, HCAW hosted Silicon Storks and Hoofddorp Pioniers hosted De Glaskoning Twins.

DSS  3  –  2  Curaçao Neptunus
The first surprising result today came from Rotterdam as Neptunus suffered anotherDSS defeat. DSS took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Tino van Erk singled up the middle with runners in scoring position. One inning later, the team from Haarlem added a run when Junior Martina hit a pinch-hit, leadoff double followed by a groundout by Mitchell Dautzenberg that allowed him to advance to third base. Odion Gouverneur then singled to left field to drive in Martina.
It took Neptunus until the seventh inning to get on the board when Dwayne Kemp scored on a wild pitch after he had stolen second and third base.
Two innings later Neptunus rallied for another run that was scored thanks to a double by Gianison Boekhoudt and a triple by Quentin de Cuba, but from there the offense stalled.
In 6.2 innings of work, Tim Halderman earned the win as he gave up one run on two hitsNeptunus and three walks and one strikeout. Elton Koeiman took the loss after 4.1 innings in which he gave up three runs on five hits and a walk and a strikeout.
Junior Martina and Tino van Erk were the best hitters for DSS as both went 2 for 3. Martina hit two doubles but Van Erk drove in two runs.

Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort  2  –  2  L&D Amsterdam Pirates
The second surprising result came from Amsterdam as both teams split the series with a win and a tied game. In the third inning, L&D Amsterdam Pirates took a 2-0 lead thanks to singles by Niels van Weert, Zerzinho Croes and Rashid Gerard. In the seventh Pirates had a golden opportunity to extend the lead as it loaded the bases with only one out but a throw from left field after what should have been a sac fly, resulted in an out at home plate where Victor Draijer was tagged out for the final out of the inning.
A single by Remian Denis in the eighth and a bases-loaded HBP in the ninth allowed Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort to tie the game. Despite having runners in scoringAmsterdam Pirates position in the extra innings, neither team did score and thus the game ended with a 2-2 tie. Despite having collected seven more hits than Quick Amersfoort and the two errors that Quick Amersfoort committed, Pirates wasn’t able to push for the victory.

Silicon Storks  3  –  13  HCAW
HCAW needed eight innings to finish today’s game, which wasn’t really a game. After Silicon Storks scored a run in the first inning, HCAW countered with three runs in the same frame. After having scored runs in the second inning (one), in the third inning (two), in the fifth inning (two) and in the seventh (one), HCAW made the final push in the bottom of the eighth after Storks scored twice in the top of the ninth. Four singles, two wild pitches a dropped fly ball led to four runs to reach the ten-run margin to end the game prematurely.
Chris Pfau pitched six solid innings in which he gave up one run on three hits and three walks as he struck out nine for the win. Aaron de Groot took the loss as he lasted 1.1HCAW innings in which he allowed four runs on five hits and a walk and struck out one.
Best hitter for HCAW was Julian Goins, who went 4 for 5 with three RBI and a run scored.

De Glaskoning Twins  3  –  6  Hoofddorp Pioniers
The third surprising result (sort of) came from Hoofddorp. Things started well for DeTwins Glaskoning Twins as the team jumped on starting pitcher Dionth Steijl and scored three runs on three singles by Bob van der Meer, Dennis de Quint and Ruar Verkerk and a double by Shurman Marlin. In the second Twins lacked a bit of luck as Nick Peels hit a line drive that was caught in an utter attempt by second baseman Tyler Boersma and that led to a double play as Max Kops took off thinking the line drive would be a base hit. But in the third inning, things went wrong for Twins. Mic van de Ven who cruised through the first two innings started to struggle with his control which resulted in five walks and three wild pitches and three runs for Pioniers. After Van de Ven was replaced by Jan Evertse, the latter wasn’t able to stop the offensive surge immediately but after three more runs, he got out of the inning and kept Pioniers scoreless for the remainder of the game. If that third inning wasn’t bad enough, disaster struck in the seventh. Jarreau Martina, who replaced Dave Janssen behind the dish, injured his shoulder/upper arm as he tried to throw out Mervin Gario, who attempted to steal second base. Gario on his turn got injured as well as he tumbled near second base. Martina could walk off the field but Mervin Gario had to be carried. Pioniers
Dion Steijl pitched a complete game for the win in which he three runs on eleven hits and struck out four. Mic van de Ven took the loss. In 2.1 innings, he gave up six runs on one hit and five walks.
Best hitter for Hoofddorp Pioniers was Mervin Gario, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
