Shawn Zarraga non-roster invitee for Dodgers spring training camp
Once again Aruban catcher Shawn Zarraga has received an invitation for the spring training camp of an MLB club as a non-roster player. This time the Dodgers invited the player of team Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Zarraga was signed to a new contract on January 17. The Dodgers assigned him to their AAA roster and invited him to ST camp. Zarraga has some history with the Dodgers’ organization. In 2015 and 2016, he split the season between AA Tulsa and AAA Oklahoma City. Last year Shawn signed a contract with the independent Cleburne Railroaders (American Association) but was released after 41 games despite his .272 batting average and his perfect record as a catcher.
After his release by the Railroaders, the Dodgers picked him up again and sent him to Tulsa, where he played just six games and had twenty plate appearances as he hit .278.
Assuming he will make it through spring training and will get a roster spot with the OKC Dodgers or the Tulsa Drillers, 2018 will be Shawn’s tenth season in professional baseball. He broke into professional baseball in 2008 when he played for the AZL Brewers. Steadily he worked his way up through the Brewers’ farm system as he reached AAA Nashville in 2014, where he hit .213. He ended up with the Dodgers later that year as the Brewers traded him.
