Aruban catcher Chadwick Tromp has received an invitation to the MLB Spring Training camp of the Cincinnati Reds in 2018. In his fifth year with the Reds organization, Chadwick has worked his way up to AA (Southern League) Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
This invitation is a reward for his hard work both at bat and behind the plate. After struggling with the Daytona Tortugas in 2016, Chadwick was sent to extended spring training in 2017. But Tromp bounced back in 2017, hitting .311 in 33 games and 119 at-bats. This earned him a promotion to the AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos. But with Pensacola, Chadwick struggled once more as he hit a modest .204. But at the A Advanced level, Chadwick also had to get used to the level, so it is very likely that he will do better at AA in 2018.
Behind the plate is a fine defensive force. In 2017 he committed only two errors in 15 games at A Advanced and in 28 games at AA combined. At both levels, he threw out a combined 28 percent of the potential base stealers, quite a bit less than in the 2016 season with Daytona when he managed to throw out 37 percent.
In 2015, Chadwick had a cup of coffee at AAA. With the Louisville Bats, he appeared in one game and went 2 for 4 with a double as they stole one base on him.
