Dreaming of a modern era Murderers’ Row
The internet is swirling with rumors about the Yankees being close to a trade for Giancarlo Stanton. Several baseball journalists on Twitter have said it is almost a done deal. Think about the lineup the Yankees would have.
You can wonder if Stanton is what the Yankees need. Nope. They don’t need him at all. But it looks like they can get him for quite a bargain. Something like shopping on Black Friday, when you see that TV set that you don’t need but which is very cheap.
Personally, I rather see the Yankees get some good pitching but I would not mind if they will haul Stanton in. Imagine the 2-6 positions in the lineup: 2. Didi, 3. Stanton, 4. Judge, 5 Sanchez, 6. Bird. One of the most dangerous lineups for sure.
According to rumors, the Yankees would have to give up some good prospects but not their best. Also an established player should be part of the package. The Yankees have various options to send established players to Miami: Brett Gardner, Starlin Castro, Aaron Hicks, Chase Headly and Jacoby Ellsbury. Personally, I’d like to see Ellsbury go. The guy is way past his prime, has a weak throwing arm. Sure he is still a speedster on the bases and because of that speed, he can cover some ground in center field, but his contract is a burden. Just like Stanton, Ellsbury has a full no-trade clause in his contract. So if the Yankees want to trade him, he has to lift it. Besides that, rumor has it the Marlins do not want him in return, so if that is true the Yankees are stuck with him.
If the Yankees send Starlin Castro to Miami, the Yankees will have two backups waiting to fill the void: Ronald Torreyes and Gleyber Torres. Perhaps one of the two will be part of the deal. With a backup for Castro ready to step in, this may be a logical move.
If the Yankees can get him, it looks like Derek Jeter bought the Marlins to hand over Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees. 😉
As written above, I rather see the Yankees get some decent pitching but I would not mind if the Yankees will get Stanton. What a formidable lineup it would be. A true Murderers’ Row part two.
