Three Dutchies become minor league free agents

Two minor league players from Curaçao and one from Aruba have become free agent. In all cases, their contract expired.

AfbeeldingsresultaatSharlon Schoop‘s one year contract with the Baltimore Orioles expired, so he will be a free agent again. Last season he split time with the AAA Norfolk Tides and the AA Bowie BaySox. The 30-year old infielder was literally used as a utility man as he played all infield positions.  With the BaySox, Sharlon hit a whopping .348 but with the Tides, his batting average was on the low side with .193.
Sharlon started his minor league career with the San Francisco Giants but after seven years his contract expired and he moved to the organization where his younger brother Jonathan was playing.

Shawn Zarragaalso had a one year contract with the Dodgers after he was released by Afbeeldingsresultaat voor Shawn Zarragathe Cleburne RailRoaders of the independent (American Association). The Dodgers sent him to the Tulsa Drillers, where he hit .278 in only six games. In five games behind the dish, he threw out 1 of 4 potential base stealers. Shawn did not commit any errors.
With the Cleburne RailRoaders, Shawn was released after 41 games when he batted .272. In only 16 of those 41 games, Shawn served as a catcher as he threw out only one base stealer in eight attempts. In three games Shawn played at first base and he was out on the mound in one game.

Gianfranco WawoeAfter seven years with the Seattle Mariners, Gianfranco Wawoe‘s contract has expired too. The 2017 season was quite a roller coaster as he was moved up to AAA and down to A-Advanced and to AA and A-Advanced again. After a short stint with the Mariners during spring training, Gianfranco was sent to the AA Arkansas Travelers with whom he played 14 games in which he hit .241 with five doubles. On May 25, he was sent down to the Modesto Nuts (A-Advanced) again. With the Nuts, he hit .270 in 97 games. Eventually near the end of the season, Gianfranco was sent to AAA Tacoma. With the Rainiers he played two games, got six at bats and struck out only once but did not collect a hit. These two games with the Rainiers, he played flawless baseball at second base.
