The 2015 season isn’t even over yet and there was a special meeting for the members of Dutch Hoofdklasse club UVV from Utrecht already.
In the last couple of weeks several rumors have been swirling around: “UVV would opt out of participating in the 2016 Hoofdklasse season” or “several players, especially those from Belgium are leaving” or “UVV is in financial trouble”. Normally I don’t pay attention to rumors like that because most of the time it is all hearsay. But in case of UVV I started to worry a bit. In the last few weeks, UVV was playing rather uninspired at times. I feared that this might have to do with the future of the club.
Regarding the rumor about players leaving, it is too soon to tell. We have to wait until the transfer period is over.
But regarding the first rumor there is some very good news to tell. UVV will play in the Hoofdklasse in the 2016 season.
Despite lacking a major jersey sponsor, the new season will be financially covered by several smaller sponsors.
It may sound weird to non-Dutch people, but in fact that is exactly the situation Dutch baseball is in right now. Without sponsors or a major sponsor like the top four teams (L&D Amsterdam Pirates, Curacao Neptunus, Vaessen Pioniers and Corendon Kinheim) are having, no top baseball is possible nowadays.
Anyhow, it is good to know that we can watch baseball on the beautiful facility of UVV next year. And perhaps the 2016 was never in danger for the club from Utrecht, but with the rumors I have heard, I was really worried that Dutch baseball might lose another club.
