The Yankees’ difficult situation at first base

It is going well with the call-ups of the New York Yankees. Recently a couple of youngsters were called up from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to debut with the MLB squad and in the blink of an eye, they ended on the DL.

The latest example is Dustin Fowler, whose debut lasted just one inning after a season-ending freak accident in right field.
Previously, Tyler Austin ended on the 10-Day disabled list thanks to a hamstring bruise. Thanks to this injury, the Yankees are in a tough situation.

Even though Austin Romine filled in well at first base last night, the number of players that can first base is tight. Yes, the Yankees do have Rob Refsnyder, but he is not their first choice right now.

So in, what appeared to be a mind-boggling move, the Yankees sent down Miguel Andujar, the guy that had a 3 for 4 debut with four RBI and a stolen base, and reacquired the contract of Chris Carter, the no-hitter, who requested to be sent to the RailRiders after he was DFA’d.

Even though Carter is doing a decent job defensively, he cannot hit an elephant from two feet away when in the batter’s box.

What other options do the Yankees have at first base? At AAA, the Yankees have one option left: Ji-Man Choi from Korea. With the RailRiders he is hitting a decent .293 but his defense is so-so. In 36 games at first base, he committed five errors. During his MiLB career, Choi had 24 errors in 287 games (.990). Perhaps it is worth to give him a try.

If Choi isn’t an option, the Yanks are stuck with Carter until Tyler Austin returns since the two first basemen the Yankees have in AA Trenton are no viable option yet.

In general, the Yankees have been hit hard by the injury bug, but since other teams have that same problem, it cannot be used as an excuse for their poor performance lately. It starts to look like the team has been living beyond its means and is coming down to earth now.
