Red Sox sign David Price
According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have struck a deal with LHP David Price. The seven year deal is worth a sloppy $217 million, with an opt out clause in the third year of the contract.
Last year the Red Sox passed on acquiring big free agents as they suggested that their rotation would be fine. We all know how that ended.
Price was masterful during the regular season with Detroit and especially with Toronto. In 21 starts with the Tigers, Price recorded 9 wins and 4 losses with an ERA of 2.53. With the Blue Jays, he had 11 starts in which he went 9-1 with a 2.30. In 2015 he limited his opponents to a batting average of .230.
But during the play offs, Price couldn’t leave his mark on the games as his play off record fell to 2 wins and 7 losses overall.
With the signing, two former Tigers will meet again as Dave Dombrowski, who was fired by the Tigers, was hired by the Red Sox shortly after his dismissal.
The acquisition of Price may not be the last move of the Red Sox to improve their rotation. With some of the depth in their farm system, they can trade to improve their bullpen any further.
