Dutch Hoofdklasse, Saturday August 1

On day two of round six in the second half of the season, the following games were scheduled.
Mampaey the Hawks @ Corendon Kinheim, Curacao Neptunus @ UVV, Pronto DSS @ L&D Amsterdam Pirates and HCAW @ Vaessen Pioniers.
Mampaey the Hawks @ Corendon Kinheim 0 – 11
Mampaey the Hawks, that decided last week to release their manager, probably because of the disappointing results, took
on Corendon Kinheim. When you look at the result, you can’t say that things have improved yet. But for two innings Jose Moreno kept Kinheim from scoring before they hit in the third.
Kevin Moesquit singled down the left field line for the lead off hit in the third and stole second base right away. Then Mervin Gario drew a walk and Bryan Engelhardt doubled down the right field line to drive in Moesquit and to put Gario and himself in scoring position. Dashenko Ricardo then drove in both runners on a single to left field. After Jeffrey Arends singled and Dudley Leonora flew out to left field, Kinheim had runners on the corners. When Victor Draijer hit towards third base the Hawks made the force out at second that made him reach first base safely on a fielder’s choice. Dashenko Ricardo scored on the play. After Draijer stole second, he scored on a single hit by Calvin Martinus.
In the next three innings Kinheim scored two runs each to reach a 11-0 score. After David Bergman, who started the game,
retired the side in the top of the seventh, the game was over due to the mercy rule.
Bergman earned the win. In seven innings he gave up four hits, walked two and fanned six. Jose Moreno took the loss. After 3.1 innings he was pulled. He allowed seven earned runs on ten hits, walked three and struck out one.
Mampaey the Hawks collected four hits. Of the four batters that collected a hit, three went 2 for 1.
Mervin Gario went 3 for 3 with a double an RBI and two runs scored.
Curacao Neptunus @ UVV 12 – 2
After the shutout of Orlando Yntema last Thursday, the question was if UVV could bounce back.
For a while it looked like it as UVV took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Kevin Kelly started the inning with
giving up two walks before Dennis Ribbens grounded out to first base and advanced both runners. Thomas Smits scored the opening run on a sac fly to center field, hit by Kevin van Ballegooy. But Neptunus bounced back in the top of the next inning. After retiring Stijn van der Meer, Jim Ploeger gave up two consecutive walks. Singles by Benjamin Dille and Raily Legito drove in two runs to give Neptunus a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth both teams scored so the lead of Neptunus remained one run. Neptunus would finally walk away in the sixth and seventh inning. Neptunus started the sixth inning with singles by Shaldimar Daantji, Dwayne Kemp and Benjamin Dille. A throwing error on Dille’s bunt gave all runners an extra base and allowed Daantji to score the fourth run for Neptunus. Railly Legito’s single drove in Dwayne Kemp and Benjamin Dille. Legito eventually scored the fourth run of that inning when Rien Vernooij singled to right field.
In the seventh inning Neptunus scored five more runs and UVV wasn’t able to score any more, so the game ended after seven innings.
Kevin Kelly lasted five innings for the win. He gave up two runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out two. Jim Ploeger
also lasted five innings but despite pitching a decent game, he took the loss as he gave up three runs on five hits. He walked five and fanned three.
Raily Legito had a helluva game at bat. He went 4 for 5 with a double, four runs batted in and three runs scored. For UVV, both Dennis de Quint and Brennan Nijhof went 2 for 3.
Pronto DSS @ L&D Amsterdam Pirates 0 – 4
L&D Amsterdam Pirates had to go the full nine innings to beat Pronto DSS. Not that DSS threatened to win, but the runs
simply didn’t come cheap. In the first inning Pirates took a 1-0 lead as Michael Duursma scored from third base on a sac fly to left field, hit by Kenny Berkenbosch. Despite having some runners in scoring position, it took Pirates until the sixth inning to extend their lead. Until that inning Mike Groen had kept the team from Amsterdam in check rather well. But after Timo van Lingen took over in the sixth, Pirates jumped on him. With runners on the corners, Bas Nooij hit a homerun that cleared the right field fence to give Pirates a decisive 4-0 lead. Only twice DSS had runners in scoring position but they couldn’t take advantage. Kyle Ward pitched eight full innings for the win in which he gave up four hits, walked one and fanned eight. Despite the good game, as described above, Mike Groen took the loss. Seb Visser was the best hitter for DSS as he
went 2 for 3. There was no doubt about who was the best hitter for Pirates: Bas Nooij went 2 for 4 with a double, a homerun and with three RBI.
HCAW @ Vaessen Pioniers 4 – 7
After the blow out loss of last Thursday, it was up to Vaessen Pioniers to rebound.
The opened the score in the first inning as Dirk van ‘t Klooster hit a solo homerun to give Pioniers a 1-0 lead. A one run
third and fourth extended their lead to 3-0. A single by Christian Fernandes, a triple by Dirk van ‘t Klooster and a wild pitch by relief pitcher Tim Niekerk gave Pioniers a 5-0 lead in the fifth. When Vince Rooi doubled in the sixth inning with runners on first and second, Pioniers extended their score to 7-0.
But as the proverb goes: It ain’t over until it’s over. HCAW started a rally in the ninth. Nick Keur started the inning with giving up a walk and hitting Roy Seltenrijch with a pitch. After Emersson Paula singled to right field and drove in Peter van Doesburg, Nick Keur hit Kevin Nieveld with a pitch to load the bases. Apparently Nick Keur was pretty nervous as he balked in Roy Seltenrijch after he retired Jelle Blauw, who hit a sac fly to right field and drove in Emersson Paula. After Kevin Nieveld reached third base on a wild pitch, he scored on another balk by Keur. Then Keur was replaced by Byron Cornelisse and the rally of HCAW ended as Cornelisse retired the next two batters for the save.
Kaj Timmermans of HCAW took the loss as he gave up three runs on three hits. He walked two and fanned two. The win was for Ricardo Hernandez, who pitched five innings in which he gave up seven hits, walked four and struck out six.
