Curaçao born Gianfranco Wawoe will play in the Frontier League in 2019. Last week, the league started its season and so far, Wawoe makes his presence felt. The Southern Illinois Miners’ infielder is leading the league when it comes to batting average.
Last year, Gianfranco signed a deal with the New Jersey Jackals of the CanAm League but that deal never came to fruition. The deal Wawoe signed with the Southern Illinois Miners did come off the ground as he played all three games with the Miners so far.
In ten at-bats, Wawoe collected five base hits of which two were doubles. He proves to be a patient hitter as he also drew three walks.
Last Sunday’s game in Evansville vs the Otters, the team with one of the oldest ballparks in professional baseball, he played his best game so far as he went 4 for 5.
In 2011, Gianfranco made his first steps in professional baseball with the VSL Mariners.
As he appeared to be stuck in the VSL in the first three seasons, he slowly moved up the affiliation ladder. Eventually, he had a cup of coffee at AAA but didn’t get a hit in six at-bats. Gianfranco ended the 2017 season with the Modesto Nuts where he batted .270 in ninety-seven games.
Wawoe also appeared with team Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2015 as the team played in the WBSC Premier 12 tournament.
