Dutch Hoofdklasse, Thursday June 18

On the first day of round two in the second half of the season, the following games were scheduled:

UVV @ Vaessen Pioniers; Mampaey the Hawks @ Pronto DSS; HCAW @ L&D Amsterdam Pirates; Corendon Kinheim @ Curacao Neptunus.
Only one game did not have a surprising outcome.

UVV @ Vaessen Pioniers  10 – 2

After Vaessen Pioniers starter Ricardo Hernandez retired the first two batters he gave up a hit to Gilmer Lampe, who promptly stole second base and scored on Dennis de Quint’s single to center field. But Pioniers fought back in the same inning. When Daniel Fernandes scored from second base on a single to left center field hit by Danny Rombley.
Pioniers took the lead in the fourth inning, With two outs, UVV starting pitcher Thijs Steenwijk gave up consecutive walks to Daniel Fernandes and Dirk van ‘t Klooster. When Danny Rombley singled up to the middle, Fernandes scored the go-ahead run. But UVV didn’t want to surrender. In the top of the sixth, two singles and a throwing error by pitcher Ricardo Hernandez, loaded the bases. A single by Brennan Nijhof tied the game at two when Dennis de Quint scored from third base. After Norbert Jongerius laid down a sac bunt, and put runners on third and second, Thomas Smits drew a walk to load the bases. When Dennis Ribbens singled to right center field, Mike Bazuin scored the go-ahead run for UVV. Three more runs in that same inning gave UVV a comfortable 6-2 lead. Eventually UVV totally ran away with the win as they scored one run in the seventh inning and three in the eighth. Both teams didn’t play the full nine innings because the curfew rule was implemented after 22:30 (10:30 PM). Kevin Noordzij earned the win for UVV after three no-hit innings in relief in which he only gave up a walk. Ricardo Hernandez took the loss after pitching 5.1 innings in which he surrendered six runs (three earned) on eight hits. Ricardo walked three and struck out four. Hitter with the most impact for UVV was Dennis de Quint, who went 4 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Danny Rombley went 2 for 4 for Pioniers and drove in two runs.

Mampaey the Hawks @ Pronto DSS  4 – 3

Quinn Tramm almost retired the first two batters of DSS that he faced but the second hitter, Mark Smit struck out swinging but the ball did get passed catcher Brian Raap, so Mark Smit could reach first base safely. Then Mitch Koot drew a walk before Ryan Miner struck out looking. Another walk given up by Quinn Tramm, loaded the bases. When Levine Gabriels hit a pop up towards first base but first baseman Gregory Trinidad failed to catch the ball so Mark Smit and Mitch Koot could score two runs for DSS. In the fourth inning, Lex Leijenaar got on base thanks to a walk. A sac bunt laid down by Joffrey Heus advanced Leijenaar to second base. A wild pitch thrown by Quinn Tramm allowed Leijenaar to advance to third. Eventually he scored on a single to left field hit by Sven Jongejans. But Mampaey the Hawks would get back into the game in the top of the sixth ining. With two outs, the Hawks started a rally when Berend Ruben singled to right field, followed by a single to center hit by Julian Goins that advanced Ruben to third. After Goins stole third base, Amir Daou hit a bases clearing double. A single hit by Steven Wharwood tied the game at three. After another single and a walk the Hawks got the bases loaded before Gino Hersilia drew another run scoring walk, to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead.
When the Hawks didn’t score anymore runs in the remaining three innings, it came down to the ninth for DSS. Kevin van Veen entered the game to close it out but all he did was giving up a single to Lex Leijenaar and a walk to Joffrey Heus. Then Van Veen was replaced by Jose Moreno. When Koen Halderman tried to steal third base he was caught and tagged out at a 1-4-6 play. Joffrey Heus advanced to second on the play. Moreno the retired the next two hitters for the save. MIchel Offerman earned the win after pitching 4.1 innings in relief. He did not give up a run or a hit, and walked one and struck out one. Jorn van Ingen took the loss after 5.2 innings on the mound. He gave up four runs on nine hits and walked one. Brian Raap went 3 for 4 for the Hawks. Lex Leijenaar collected one hit in two at bats for DSS.

HCAW @ L&D Amsterdam Pirates  2 – 6

Both teams did not score in the first two innings but in the top of the third, HCAW took a surprising 1-0 lead. Starting pitcher Dennis Burgersdijk of L&D Amsterdam Pirates retired the first two batters he faced before he gave up a walk to Roy Seltenreich. Seltenreich stole second before Emersson Paula drew another walk. Then Rossini Frolijk singled to left field and drove in Seltenreich from second base to give HCAW the 1-0 lead. HCAW even took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Raoull Kortstam scored from second base on a single to right field, hit by Peter van Doesburg.
But Pirates answered in the bottom of the same ininng by scoring three runs. With two outs and Linoy Croes at first base (reached on a fielder’s choice), Roelie Henrique drew a walk to put Croes in scoring position. Nick Urbanus then doubled to center field and drove in Croes and Henrique. Urbanus scored on a ground rule double hit by Kenny Berkenbosch.
Pirates scored another run in the bottom of the fifth when Koen Nooij scored from third base when Linoy Croes singled to center field. Two runs scored in the sixth and the seventh brought the final score to 6-2. Dennis Burgersdijk earned his first win of the 2015 hoofdklasse season. In 5.1 innings he gave up two runs on six hits. He walked three and fanned six. Sander Helmendach lasted four innings in which he gave up four runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out two and was tabbed with the loss. Jorin van Amstel was the best hitter for Pirates as he went 2 for 3. Emersson Paula went 1 for 3 and made him the best hitter of HCAW.

Corendon Kinheim @ Curacao Neptunus  6 – 4

Corendon Kinheim apparently has found it’s groove after the 22-5 win over Vaessen Pioniers, three weeks ago. A mammoth first inning gave them a big lead over Curacao Neptunus. Kevin Moesquit led off with a hit towards second baseman Benjamin Dille who made a throwing error that allowed Moesquit to reach first base. After Mervin Gario singled to put Moesquit on second base, Brian Engelhardt also singled to drive in Moesquit for the opening run. Then Dudley Leonora singled to left field where Urving Kemp made a fielding error that allowed Mervin Gario to score and put runners on the corners. Jefferey Arends also hit to left field and drove in Brian Engelhardt. With one out Philip Ortez fouled out towards first base, Jeffrey Arends advanced to third and Dudley Leonora scored Kinheim’s fourth run. Victor Draijer finally drove in Kinheim’s fifth run of the inning when he singled to center field.
It took Neptunus until the bottom of the fifth inning to get on the board. With one out, Rien Vernooij doubled to right field and advanced to third on a 4-3 ground out hit by Christian Diaz. Vernooij eventually scored on Benjamin Dille’s single down the left field line.
But Kinheim nullified the run that Neptunus scored in the fifth by scoring one in the top of the sixth. inning.
Both team had runners at third base later in the game but they could not take advantage of it. In the ninth inning Arshwin Asjes took the mound to finish the game. Instead of retiring the batters he gave up a three run homerun to Gianison Boekhoudt that brought Neptunus back in the game. After retiring Rien Vernooij, After gaving up two singles to Christian Diaz and Benjamin DIlle, Arshwin Asjes retired the next two hitters to give Kinheim the win.
Tom Stuifbergen earned the win after pitching seven innings in which he gave up one run on six hits and struck out four.
After giving up five runs in the first inning, DIegomar Markwell recovered rather well. He took the loss though and gave up six runs (three earned) on nine hits. He struck out four. Philip Ortez was the best hitter for Kinheim as he went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs batted in. GIanison Boekhoudt was the best hitter for Neptunus. He collected three hits out of four at bats and drove in three runs with a homerun.
