Worst World Series ever?

ESPN published this article on the upcoming World Series. According to ESPN the 2014 edition would be the worst World Series ever…. Why? Because there are two Wild Card teams in it and their win-loss record isn’t quite something to write home about. Both teams had fewer than 90 wins in the regulars season.

Why on earth is David Schoenfield so negative? Sure these teams finished second in their division. Sure these teams didn’t have the best win-loss record. But did he think about their batting average as a team? The Giants hit .244 in the post season so far. Look where their opponents are at .192. The Royals did even better as a team: .259, while their opponents only hit a slim .210.
Did Schoenfield look at their team ERA? The team ERA of the Royals is a very decent 2.93. The Giants’ team ERA is even better with a very low 2.15.

If the other teams that won their divison were so good, why aren’t these teams in the World Series?  The Royals didn’t lose a single game in the playoffs so far, sweeping the Angels in three games and the Orioles in four. The Giants needed more games but still beat the Nationals 3 games to 1 and eliminated the Cardinals 4 games to 1.

I have read that this David Schoenfield ends the article with a more positive note, but that doesn’t wash away the bad taste that the first part of his article gives me.

I am very excited about the upcoming World Series. Both teams are quite clutch and have some great pitching. I am hoping for a seven game series. I don’t mind who will win. I can live with both teams as a victor. I like the Giants and I like the Royals as the “underdogs”. But after sweeping their opponents, can the Royals still be considered as an underdog? I don’t think so.

Anyhow, I will have a day off tomorrow, so I can watch game one. I wish all of you baseball fans a great World Series. Kick back and enjoy.
