Minor League history: Alabama-Florida League / Alabama State League

Minor League Baseball has a rich history. Through the decades, there have been many (obscure) leagues that came and went. Some stood the test of time, but most folded after several years. This series is about the various minor leagues that came and went. In the first episode I will pay attention to:
The Alabama-Florida League / Alabama State League
After three seasons, the Alabama-Florida League which was founded in 1936, changed it’s name into Alabama State League.
As ASL, the league played until 1951, when the name was changed back into Alabama-Florida League. The league as a whole (Alabama-Florida League and the Alabama State League) had a class D classification. Class D was the predecessor of today’s Rookie League. As you can see in the list of cities represented, it was not uncommon in those days if teams moved to another town during the season. Most of the time financial problems due to lacking attendance were the reason for these moves. In fact not much has changed nowadays. The only difference is that teams do not move during the season.anymore.
The Alabama State League played on for two more years to cease activities because of World War II. First of all baseball was subject to travel restrictions but many if not most players were drafted for the military.
After the war, the Alabama State League resumed to play again, like many other leagues in 1946. The league would continue to play through the 1962 season after which it folded. The league survived the 50s, which was a hard decade for minor league baseball, when TV brought more live Major League Baseball, that made people stay home instead of flocking to the minor league ballparks.
