Dutch Hoofdklasse, Tuesday June 23

Last night there was a game between UVV and Vaessen Pioniers, that was actually scheduled for last Sunday, buth which was cancelled due to heavy rainfall and one that was scheduled for later this year. But at that time, Curacao Neptunus will have some obligations in the European Cup.

L&D Amsterdam Pirates @ Curacao Neptunus  2 – 4

L&D Amsterdam Pirates took off with a single to left field hit by Roelie Henrique. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Michael Duursma. Then Nick Urbanus hit a ground ball single towards center field that drove in Henrique for the opening run Curacao Neptunus countered in the very same inning. Stijn van der Meer led off with a ground ball towards first baseman Kenny Berkenbosch, who committed a fielding error. A single by Dwayne Kemp and a bunt laid down by Benjamin Dille loaded the bases. When Gianison Boekhoudt grounded out 4-3, Stijn van der Meer scored an unearned run to tie the game. When Rien Vernooij grounded out 5-3, Dwayne Kemp scored the go-ahead run for Neptunus. Benjamin Dille eventually scored Nepunus’ third run on a double hit by Christian Diaz.
In the fifth inning, Pirates cut Neptunus’ lead in half. Bas Nooij led off the inning with a single up through the middle, followed by a 5-3 ground out hit by Jesse Aussems on which Nooij could advance to second base. When Rashid Gerard reached first base on a fielding error by first baseman Rien Vernooij, Bas Nooij scored an unearned run from second base.
In the eighth innning, when Rob Cordemans was pulled after seven innings, Robin Schel faced only Stijn van der Meer, who grounded out 5-3 on a bunt. Then Schel was replaced by Daan Hendrix who gave up a single to Dwayne Kemp. But Kemp was thrown out at a base stealing attempt for the second out. After Benjamin Dille reached first base on a fielding error by third baseman Rachid Gerard, Gianison Boekhoudt drew a walk to put runners on first an second. Eventually Benjamin Dille scored an insurance run when Rien Vernooij singled to left field. In the ninth, Loek van Mil, who had entered the game in the seventh inning, retired the side for the save.
Berry van Driel earned the win after 2.1 innings in relief. Starter Kevin Kelly left the game with a 3-1 lead but he only pitched three innings, so he could not earn the win. Rob Cordemans lasted seven innings and gave up three runs for the loss. Even though the play-by-play only mentions one error (with Stijn van der Meer at bat), the box score states that all runs that Cordemans gave up were unearned.
Best hitter for Neptunus was Dwayne Kemp with three hits out of four at bats and a run scored. Once again, Bas Nooij was the best hitter for Pirates, going 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

Vaessen Pioniers @ UVV  1 – 0

This game was actually scheduled for last Sunday, but was rained out then.
It was a real promotion for baseball as both teams played some solid baseball. The game would be decided by only one run. The game needed ten innings. During the regular nine innings only Vaessen Pioniers managed to get a runner at third base once, but the team could not cash in.
So in tenth game, the dreaded tie breaker rule was used again and Pioniers put Mark-Jan Moorman at second base and Quintin de Cuba at first. Kevin Dirksen led off with a sac bunt but reached on a fielder’s choice as pitcher Jerremyh Angela threw to third base where Mark-Jan Moorman was put out. Kevin Weijgertse was the second out on an infield fly. Taylor Clemensia singled to left field where left fielder Jordan Illis committed a fielding error that allowed Quintin de Cuba to score the first run of the game. UVV didn’t manage to score, even though they had a runner on third base.
It must have been a bitter loss for UVV, losing the game in extra inings on a fielding error.
Bayron Cornelisse earned the win for Pioniers as he pitched the in the tenth inning and gave up only a walk and no hits and struck out one. Jerremyh Angela took the loss as he allowed one unearned run.
As the runs didn’t come cheap, so didn’t the hits. Pioniers had two hitters that got one hit out of three at bats. UVV’s Jamie Verheyleweghen went 1 for 2.
