Biloxi Shuckers’ road trip farce not over yet

The Biloxi Shuckers started the season with a 55-game road trip. Why? Because their stadium (MGM Park) wasn’t ready before the start of the season. The Shuckers (AA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers) used to be the Huntsville Stars until the end of the 2014 season.

The construction of the $36 million ballpark started with a delay. The expected opening date was June 6, but now the mayor of Biloxi has announced that that date cannot be met. It would cost the city of Biloxi a sloppy $380.000 to be sure that the stadium could open it’s doors on June 6. Result: the grand opening will be delayed.

Mayor Gillich said: “My decision was an easy one. I support the stadium and the Biloxi Shuckers, and I’m eager to see the first home game. But I certainly won’t ask the taxpayers to invest that much more into the project, especially with no assurances that the stadium would be ready in nine days. There seems to be some misperceptions that construction is behind schedule just because it’s not ready yet,” Gilich said. “Yates has worked hard to finish ahead of schedule and I believe they will.”

According to the contract with the construction company, Yates Construction has until August 4 to finish the project….
