Merchtem Cats Add Import Catcher to Roster

On their socials, the Merchtem Cats announced they added a very experienced catcher to their roster for the 2026 season. Next to being a backstop, this player will function as coach next to Jamie Flynn.

This new addition, Tyler Hill, has played at several levels of baseball in the USA. One of them was the Atlantic League, widely regarded as the highest level of independent baseball.

As most catchers aren’t the best hitters, his batting average of .205 with the Charleston Dirty Birds won’t come as a surprise. He has some pop in his bat as he hit four home runs in 2025. But in previous seasons in the Atlantic League, his batting average was much higher. With the York Revolution in 2021, he batted .252, and with the Lancaster Barnstormers in 2022, he batted a respectable .273.

Potential base stealers in the Belgian Division One will have a hard time with Tyler behind the plate as his “pop-time” is a little bit less than two seconds.

As written in the prologue, Tyler will help manager Jamie Flynn as a coach. He will be a mentor for all players of the club. He has a passion to build teams with home grown players, so exactly the kind of guy the Cats need, as they are a club working with a lot of home grown talent.

Here are some stats of Tyler in Indy baseball:

Outside the foul lines, Tyler is a leader, according to the Cats’ website. Recently, he received the Community Ambassador Award of the Atlantic League for his work outside the diamond. He is a clubhouse guy, who takes care of fun, focus and a professional mentality in the ballpark. In the Atlantic League, he was a fan favorite.
