With the end of the transaction period in Belgian baseball behind us, it is time to pay attention to the several clubs in Division 1 and to the players they acquired and those who they lost. Today, we pay attention to the four-time Belgian champions Deurne Spartans.
Except for several players that came from Antwerp Eagles last year, but never really had a shot on making the team, only two of the core left, so that’s good news for the Deurne Spartans. Hsib Niazi will join neighbour Borgerhout Squirrels, and Steff Roymans hangs up his cleats.
Knowing their permanent members from Venezuela will likely return next year, Spartans acquired three new players. Like many other clubs, also Spartans took advantage of the collapse of the Brussels Kangaroos. From that club, RHP Cédric Desmedt, IF Elio Fundora, and pitcher Elvis Polanco will join the Spartans. Besides these three, also Junior DeSaedeleer will join the club as he moves from the Southern part of the Antwerp airport to the Northern part. In other words, Junior has left Mortsel Stars.
Cédric Desmedt was one of the carrying players of the Brussels Kangaroos. He posted a 5-1 record with a 3.23 ERA and struck out fourty-seven batters.
Elvis Polanco had a 5-3 record with a 3.62 ERA as he fanned thirty-four.
Elio Fundora batted .282 with one home run, two triples, and four doubles. On the defensive side, he posted a .933 fielding percentage.
Junior DeSaedeleer had a modest batting average of .265 with the Mortsel Stars. With 102 at-bats, he had the most of the Stars by far. He cannot be called a power hitter as he hit two doubles, but with fourteen walks, he knows how to get on base. The third baseman had a .900 field percentage.
I would like to thank Pit de Bens for providing the information I needed to write this blog post. Your help is appreciated.
