The past week, Italian baseball news was all about San Marino, because the club stated not to sign up for the 2023 season due to disagreements with the FIBS about the new format of the Serie A. Today, the club gave in and announced it will join the 2023 Serie A season.
By paying the registration fee, the club has met the standards to participate in the upcoming season. Luckily. It would have been a bad thing for baseball if the champion of the Serie A would not participate to defend its title.
In the past weeks, T&A San Marino, through chairman Alberto Antolini, stated the Serie A is at a dead end. In the past 10-15 years, several clubs dropped out of the league, back then called Italian Baseball League and Serie A1. According to Antonlini, it is a bad thing that the majority of the clubs is struggling to stay afloat. He wants San Marino to be part of an elite group that can play the best baseball possible in Italy.
What made San Marino decide to join the 2023 Serie A is unknown. The website of the FIBS (Italian Baseball and Softball Federation) announced the news, but did not breathe a word about the reason why San Marino gave in.
With the addition of T&A San Marino, the number of Serie A clubs in 2023 will be thirty:
