Dutch hoofdklasse 2021: Round 1, Day 1

Tonight the long awaited 2021 season took off. Unfortunately three games were canceled already due to superfluous rainfall: Hoofddorp Pioniers @ L&D Amsterdam Pirates, Oosterhout Twins @ HCAW, and DSS/Kinheim @ Quick Amersfoort.

The only game that could be played tonight was Curaçao Neptunus @ Silicon Storks (at the ballpark of Neptunus). The three rained out games will be played tomorrow night, barring the weather that won’t cooperate.

Curaçao Neptunus  8  –  0  Silicon Storks

neptunus logo | Honkbal, Logo'sNot the most exciting game tonight. Neptunus cruised to an easy victory as Storks wasn’t capable of getting enough hits off Diegomar Markwell to become of any danger. For one inning, Storks could keep Neptunus at zero. In the top of the second inning, pitcher Jayden Gonesh started the inning by giving up a walk to former Major Leaguer Roger Bernadina and a home run to center field by Gianison Boekhoudt. Neptunus came close to scoring a third run in the top of the fourth inning when Dashenko Ricardo got on base on a fielders choice and Gianison Boekhoudt raced home from second base, but Boekhoudt was tagged out at home plate. In the next at-bat with Quentin de Cuba in the batters box, that third run was scored anyway when Dudley Leonora touched home plate on a passed ball.
In the top of the seventh, Neptunus extended their score when John Polonius crossed home plate on Dwayne Kemp’s single to center field. A three-run eighth and a one-run ninth put the final score on the board.  No photo description available.
Despite being outscored, Storks wasn’t really outhit as they collected only three hits less than Neptunus. Unfortunately for them, their hits were too much spread out over the game.
Diegomar Markwell pitched six innings for the win. He gave up five hits, two walks and struck out five.  John Polonius and Dwayne Kemp both went 2 for 5, driving in two runs. Polonius was a tad better as he hit one double. Jayden Gonesh took the loss after four innings of work in which he gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits and four walks as he struck out five.
