Curaçao Baseball League gets quality impulse with minor leaguers

A few days ago, the FEBEKO (Baseball Federation of Curaçao) organized a draft among the clubs of the Curaçao AA League, the island’s highest level of baseball. With this draft, several minor league players were picked by the teams of the league.

The biggest name around was Jair Jurrjens, but he was signed by the WildCats already. Jurrjens played at AAA level for most of the past five years. In 2016, he had a stint with the Uni-President Lions of the CPBL in Taiwan. In 2014, he had a cup of coffee with the Colorado Rockies but was bothered by breathing problems. A demotion to Colorado Springs followed and eventually he was released by the Rockies. Another familiar name in Dutch and Curaçao baseball is Calten Daal. He was signed by the WildCats as well.

The following teams have drafted the following players:

Marchena Braves: Jonathan Willems, Kevin Josephina.

Groot Kwarter: Cliyano Nahr, Stephan Vidal

Firebirds: Jamal Zalm, Raysheandal Michel

Wild Cats: Ray Jacson Chirino, Jediah Kwidama

Royal Scorpions: Rushenton Tomsjansen, Shervyen Newton

Jonathan Willems played in his fourth minor league season in 2019, finishing the season with the Dayton Dragons (A Full Season) after putting up some good numbers with the Billings Mustangs (Advanced Rookie).

Kevin Josephina was playing in his sixth season in 2019. He played all year with the Florida FireFrogs (A-Advanced) and batted .258 in 112 games.

Stephan Vidal played with two teams in 2019. The Idaho Falls Chukars (Advanced Rookie) and the Wilmington Blue Rocks (A-Advanced).

Raysheandal Michel was playing in his fifth year as a professional. In 2019 he played for the Mississippi Braves (AA) and the Florida FireFrogs.

Jediah Kwidama was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks, earlier this year, so he doesn’t have any minor league game under his belt.

Ray Jacson Chirino was signed by the Cincinnati Reds in July 2019 and hasn’t played a game so far.

Rushenton Tomsjansen has spent the past two years in the Dominican Summer League where he batted .211 over two seasons.

Shervyen Newton spent his fourth professional year with the Columbia FireFlies (A Full Season). With the FireFlies, he batted .209 in 109 games.

Cliyano Nahr and Jamal Zalm were also signed last year and haven’t played a game yet.

Two clubs that are not mentioned here are the Santa Maria and the Santa Rosa. None of the two clubs picked a player from the draft. In case of Santa Maria, they had signed Juremi Profar and Darren Seferina already.
