2019 Olympic Qualifier: Dutch bounce back

For a long time, the Kingdom of the Netherlands had a hard time to walk away but eventually, in the seventh inning, the Dutch scored some insurance run that secured the 6-2 win.

Spain sent Holwuin Sacramento to the mound, the pitcher that made the Dutch life very hard during the European Championship’s semi-final. But unlike last week’s semi-final, the Dutch did not have to wait until the eighth inning to score a run. After Hendrik Clementina was hit by a pitch, he was moved over on a bunt single by Sharlon Schoop. Yurendell de Caster followed with a double to left center field that drove in two runs. When John Polonius hit towards third baseman Leonmartires Rodriguez, the latter threw the ball way past first base. Polonius advanced to second on the play and De Caster could score the third run for the Dutch.

In the top of the third, Spain had a runner on first with one out. A fly ball that was hit by Engel Beltre would lead to a nice double play as Calten Daal caught the ball somewhere between the infield and center field. Daal quickly turned around and bowled Blake Ochoa off first base for the final out of the inning.

For four innings, Rob Cordemans kept the Spanish lineup in check rather well but in the fifth, Spain threatened with runners on the corners and no outs. A sac fly Leonmartires Rodriguez drove in Lesther Galvan. After five solid innings, Rob Cordemans was replaced by Lars Huijer, who didn’t start well as he allowed runners on first and second. But Huijer helped his own cause as he fielded a ball and was the start of a double play, followed by a strikeout to get out of the inning without any damage.

The liberating runs came in the seventh and eighth inning. Hendrik Clementina singled home two in the seventh and a sac fly hit by Curt Smith drove in another.

Even though Spain scored one more time, the Dutch win was not in danger.

Rob Cordemans earned the win after five innings in which he gave up a run on three hits and a walk and struck out five.

Yurendell de Caster was the best hitter for the Netherlands as he went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
