Posada joins Marlins’ front office
With a partial owner and a manager with a Yankee past already, the third former Yankee will join the Miami Marlins. Even though it is not official yet, former Yankee catcher Jorge Posada is spotted at the Marlins’ Spring Training camp already.
According to sources, Posada will join the Marlins as a special advisor to Baseball Operations.
This move isn’t really surprising as Posada was seen during Marlins games last season. Since he and Jeter have spent most of their MLB careers together, they have become very close.
A native of Puerto Rico, Posada and his family are longtime Miami residents. The Marlins reportedly had free-agent conversations with him about a contract for the 2012 season, but he ultimately decided to call it a career. The dangerous switch-hitter slashed .273/.374/.474 with 275 home runs in 1,829 regular season games next to his many playoff appearances.
After his retirement, Posada contributed to the Players’ Tribune, Jeter’s website that offers the opportunity to pro athletes to post stories for sports fans.
With both Jeter and Posada belonged to the core four/five of the 1990s Yankees, perhaps Jeter decides to hire more former teammates. Former Players like Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, and Bernie Williams come to mind.
While with the Yankees, Posada won four World Series titles (1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009).
During his first year in professional baseball with the Oneonta Yankees in 1991, Posada played second base. But it became apparent that he lacked the speed to become an infielder. From that point, the transition to catcher began. Even though catcher wasn’t his natural position, Posada made big strides and debuted in the Bigs in 1995 as he played one game. Eventually, in 1997, Posada had his breakout year as he played 60 games for the New York Yankees.
In a 17-year career, Posada played a total of 1829 regular season games. He also played 125 postseason games in which he batted a modest .248.
