ABL round seven: Sydney takes commanding lead

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor Brut ABLWith three more rounds to play, everything is still possible. But the Sydney Blue Sox have made an important step to clinch a spot in the semi-finals. As the Blue Sox won today’s game and the series vs the Brisbane Bandits, the Perth Heat had an easy series vs the Adelaide Bite.

Today, the Sydney Blue Sox played another close game vs the reigning champion, the Brisbane Bandits. Four one-run innings (in the first four frames) were enough to clinch the series. Brisbane came close as it scored thrice (one in the third and two in the eighth) but eventually their offense fell one run short.

Dutch hoofdklasse player Dwayne Kemp went 1 for 3 but the best hitter for the Blue Sox today was Alex Howe, who went 2 for 3. Josh Guyer earned his league-leading fifth victory (shared with fellow teammate Alessandro Maestri and Steven Kent of the Canberra Cavalry) while Todd van Steensel earned his league-leading eighth save. The Blue Sox are now in first place with a 4.5 game lead over the Brisbane Bandits.

The Adelaide Bite was no match for the Perth Heat as the latter won 9-0. A four-run first inning laid the foundation for this big victory in which the Heat collected only three more hits than the Bite (9-6). Best hitter for the Heat was Robbie Glendinning who went 2 for 2 with a solo home run. Dutch hoofdklasse player Sam Kennelly went o for 1 in a pinch-hit plate appearance.

Despite the series win, the Perth Heat did not manage to unburden itself from the Melbourne Aces that won the series vs Geelong-Korea by three games to one. Both teams will face each other next week in a series for first place.

The Auckland Tuatara and the Canberra Cavalry split the series as Auckland beat Canberra 3-2 in today’s game. After the Tuatara had taken an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, it took Canberra three innings to tie the game. Eventually, in the sixth inning, Auckland scored once when Kris Richards hit a leadoff double, followed by a flyout by Beau Te Wera Bishop to right field and a groundball single up the middle, hit by Guiyuan Xu.
Scott Richmond earned the win after five innings in which he gave up two runs on three hits and a walk as he struck out four. The save went to Yuki Harada who fanned one in 1.1 innings of work. Kris Richards went 3 for 5 with a double and a run scored.
