How to reshape a cap that is too big
A few years ago you could read a blog post about how to reshape a worn down cap on this blog. It bothered me that old caps lost its shape. That is why I tried to patch them up. It is also possible to make caps that are too big fit. You can read it down below.
The other day, I bought a cap of the Belgian major league club Deurne Spartans. As the end of the season is nearing, it was their last one, a Richardson size 7 1/2. Normally with some adaptions, I can make New Era caps of that size fit very well. But since Richardson caps are normally a tad bigger than the size that is mentioned on the tab, I realized I might have a problem. You may wonder why on earth did I buy a cap that is too big. Well, I wanted it really bad and I did not want to wait for another year.
What did I do to make this oversized cap fit? Well, I put it in steaming hot water for a while and then put it into the microwave for ten minutes. When I took it out of the microwave and put it on my head, the cap fit much better but it wasn’t perfect yet.
I repeated the steps one more time, steaming hot water, into the microwave for ten minutes and now it fits like a glove.
Please make sure that you don’t dip the cap into water too long. Just 3-5 minutes will be fine. Otherwise the lid/brim may lose its shape.
WARNING!! Please make sure there are no iron parts inside the cap: the button on top of it for example. This may ruin your microwave.
So next time, you want to buy a cap but they only have one that is one size or two sizes bigger than the ones you actually wear, just buy it and just follow the steps as described above. Success is assured.
[Addition] WARNING!! If you do this with New Era caps, seven minutes in the microwave is enough. Otherwise, the sweatband may melt.
Please note that you can only do this with synthetic caps. This will NOT work with wool caps as they will lose their shape when you do this.
