Super 6 2018: Day 5
Plenty of games scheduled today. First of all the regular games between Spain and Italy, Czech Republic and Germany and Kingdom of the Netherlands vs Belgium but also yesterday’s rained out game between Spain and Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Czech Republic 4 – 5 Germany
In the game between the Czech Republic and Germany, both teams were each other’s match. Even though Germany started with a 3-0 lead in the second inning and extended it to 4-0 in the fourth inning, the Czechs fought their way back as they scored twice in the sixth inning and twice in the eighth. But a solo home run by Simon Gühring in the bottom of the eighth frame sealed the fate of the Czech Republic.
On a walk, two singles, a fielding error and a sac fly Germany scored three runs in the second inning. Vincent Ahrens contributed in the fourth with a solo home run to right field. The four runs scored by the Czech Republic came on a double by Petr Cech and a single by Martin Muzik in the sixth inning and on two sac flies by Jakub Malik and Petr Cech.
Winning pitcher for Germany was Niklas Rimmel who pitched the final 1.2 innings in which he gave up a hit and struck out two.
Best hitter for the Germans was Maik Ehmcke who went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
Spain 5 – 8 Italy
It wasn’t a slugfest like yesterday’s game vs the Czech Republic but still Italy slugged four home runs vs Spain to beat them 8-5. Two four-run innings were enough to clinch the win for the Squadra Azzurri.
After Spain had taken a 2-0 lead in the first two innings, Italy bounced back in the bottom of the second. A solo dinger by Robel Garcia, a two-run shot by Andrew Maggi and a single by Chris Colabello drove in four runs to turn the tables. Another (solo) home run by Andrew Maggi, a two-run homer by Giuseppe Mazzanti and a single by (again) Chris Colabello drove in four more runs.
In the remaining innings, Spain inched closer by scoring a run in the sixth, in the eighth and the ninth inning but it wasn’t enough to endanger Italy’s lead.
Winning pitcher was Luis Lugo, who pitched six innings in which he gave up three runs on six hits and struck out nine.
Best hitter for Italy was Chris Colabello, who went 3 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.
