Curt Smith earns postseason All-Star team honors
Curaçao born Curt Smith has been named postseason All-Star in the American Association. The 31-year old DH/1B has spent his sixth season in the independent league.
Smith had another stellar season as he hit above .300 (.315) and was tied for fourth place with five triples. With seventeen dingers Smith was tied for seventh place in the league and with 74 RBI he was tied for third place.
His good season did not help his club, the Lincoln SaltDogs as the team finished fourth, 19.5 games out of first place in the South Division.
Next to this honor, Smith was named the league’s player of the month for the name of August. In this month, Smith hit .318 with home runs, 22 RBIs, and a .017 rise in batting average. Smith’s performance of the month came in an 8-1 win over the Texas AirHogs on August 17. In the game, Smith went 3-for-5 with one home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored.
Smith broke into professional baseball in 2008 with the Johnson City Cardinals (Rookie, Appalachian League). After his release by the Cardinals in April 2011, Smith was signed by the Lincoln SaltDogs for the first time. The Florida Marlins signed him in 2012 who sent him to the Jacksonville Suns (AA, Southern League).
After he elected free agency he was signed by the Minnesota Twins in 2013 who placed him at the roster of the New Britain RockCats (AA, Eastern League). After his release in July, Smith returned to the Lincoln SaltDogs. After the 2014 season in which he played for the Cardinals’ organization, Smith returned to the SaltDogs again and has played there ever since.
